Events: Selfie masks, hidden sounds, and art from the left overs

Mirrors
Painter Pip Dickens considers the masks that people present to the world, through the concept of the mirror as metaphor. Seeing ‘de-formalised self-portraiture’ of the selfie as one such deflection of a person’s ‘true self’, the portraits Dickens paints are often deliberately obscured.

Now We Are 40
The co-operative Centrespace Studios & Gallery celebrates its 40th anniversary with an exhibition of works by current members ranging from fine art, glass and ceramics to illustration, animation and architectural design. Over the course of 40 years, more than 200 artists, designers and makers have worked in the Leonard Lane building, which is located in Bristol’s medieval quarter.

Last Station/ Located: Southport
Elise Liversedge and Mary Hooper, collaborating under the name Elise & Mary, present the culmination of their four-year Last Station project, which explores the UK’s marine history and waterways as a way of thinking about how we form a sense of identity. Over the course of the project, Elise & Mary have created a series of immersive spaces that contain sculpture and multimedia projections that reference light vessels and buoys as states of location and dislocation. An artists’ talk will take place on Tuesday 14 November at 1pm.

Left Overs
Procreate Project curate an exhibition of works by 20 artists, shortlisted for the Mother Art Prize 2017, that voice their experiences of motherhood and the perennial question of making time for oneself and one’s art practice. The private view is on Friday 17 November.

Sound: lost and found
Centred on a circular walk from West Bay to Bridport and back, this free workshop introduces participants to specialist field recording equipment and sound preparation, culminating in a live improvised performance – the Lost and Found Symphony – at the end of the day. Based on sound and listening within the environment, lost and hidden sounds will be discovered and recorded. Part of the Being Human Festival.
