New public gallery to open at Camberwell College of Arts Camberwell Space is to reopen in January 2018 in a new, purpose-built gallery at Camberwell College of Arts’ Peckham Road site, next door to the South London Gallery. The public programme will launch with an exhibition exploring drawing practice and teaching at the college titled ‘A History of Drawing’. Curated by artist and educator Kelly Chorpening, it will feature work by artists including Edward Ardizzone, Wendy Smith, Euan Uglow and Matthew Ritchie, alongside work by recent graduates and current teaching staff.
Marina Abramović responds to backlash for failing to return Kickstarter money for abandoned project On 12 November, the New York Post featured the artist on the cover of its Sunday edition with a headline that read, ‘Art of the ‘Steal’’. The article questions what the artist did with $2.2 million in donations. In response, Abramović said that more than $1.1 million were her own contributions. She also issued an open statement explaining where the funds went and denouncing the publication’s report.
Leonardo da Vinci painting sells for £341m at auction, smashing records Christie’s in New York sells Salvator Mundi, the long-lost Leonardo da Vinci painting of Jesus Christ commissioned by King Louis XII of France more than 500 years ago. It sold for $450m (£341m), including auction house premium, which is a world record for any work of art sold at auction. Alan Wintermute, a senior specialist in old master paintings at Christie’s in London, called it the ‘holy grail‘ of old masters.
Scottish ministers call for Lottery recovery plan With National Lottery funding accounting for 40% of Creative Scotland’s and Sport Scotland’s total income, Scottish culture secretary Fiona Hyslop and sport minister Aileen Campbell have asked UK culture secretary Karen Bradley to intervene with funding to offset the steep decline in Lottery revenue.
Kickstarter launches Drip, a service for subscribing to artists’ projects Intended to help raise money for creators, the service is open to visual and performing artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, craftspeople, and designers. They can create tiers of membership for different kinds of access to their projects, with the goal being that these subscriptions will help fund the artist’s future projects, at the same time encouraging the artist to create more content for subscribers.
Turner Contemporary amongst successful applicants in Arts Council England’s latest Strategic Touring funding round The Margate-based organisation will receive £223,725 for ‘Resort’, a new touring network of coastal galleries across England designed to offer more people the opportunity to engage with the arts. Featuring a touring exhibition of seaside photography, artists will also be commissioned to work with young families to capture and reflect their experiences of growing up in a coastal town.
Documenta’s budget issues will not put next edition at risk The City of Kassel says it can cover €5.4 million deficit from this year’s event, with the 15th Documenta announced as taking place between 18 June and 25 September 2022. Boris Rhein, the state of Hesse’s culture minister, said after a meeting of the Documenta supervisory board that “Documenta is a great stroke of fortune and a cultural treasure for the state of Hesse, and we must preserve it”.
Goldsmiths Gallery opening delayed until September 2018 The new contemporary art gallery at Goldsmiths University, Goldsmiths CCA, is now set to open in September 2018. Originally scheduled for next May, the 1,000m² project – which is the first major building commission for Turner Prize winning architecture collective Assemble – forms part of the redeveloped Grade II listed Laurie Grove Baths and adjoining water tanks.
Government doubles number of visa for ‘exceptional’ talent outside EU 2,000 visas will now be made available each year, enabling the recipient to work in the UK for 10 years. Significant evidence of creative achievements will be required, with home secretary Amber Rudd saying the increase will keep the country “at the heart of world culture”.
