Members’ events: neighbourly rivalry, Persian poetry, and a Latin-American manifesto

Od Arts Festival: The Art of Rivalry
Echoing its namesake, the Od, a stream that passes through East and West Coker, this new contemporary arts festival weaves its route among and between the two neighbouring villages, all the while meditating on ‘past, present and future rivalries’. Led by OSR Projects and curated by Simon Lee Dicker and Bob Gelsthorpe, the multi-site festival includes exhibitions, commissions and participatory works from artist-led groups.

Falling to Grace
Artists Melanie Thompson and Kathryn John, working together as WILDEDGES, have been artists in residence with The Alfred Gillett Trust for the past year. To mark the culmination of this collaborative period, the artists present three days of site-specific events in The Grange’s walled orchard, including films covering the four seasons the artists spent in the orchard and an installation that respond’s to the Trust’s archives, which span six generations of the family shoemaking company C & J Clark Ltd’s heritage collection.

Constructing a narrative…
Artists Gary James Williams and Jo Manby re-contextualise objects from the Manchester Metropolitan University Special Collections with texts and poems from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a subversive book of poetry by the Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries. Hovering on the boundaries of curation, this collaborative artwork considers the nature of collections through a fictional narrative.

Viewing Machine
Architectural and geometric form, colours and light are all used with striking and considered effect in Rachel Hendry‘s installations, that consider and cinematically reconfigure our sense of space. Viewing Machine is a new site-specific installation that uses stop motion animation alongside live motion and flash frame techniques, continuing Hendry’s exploration of ‘the boundaries between real and imagined space’, specifically with how our relationship with technology affects our perceptions and experiences.

Latinos Creative Society Manifesto
Inspired by the Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar’s novel Rayuela (Hopscotch), the manifesto of this new society of Latin-American artists from University of the Arts London will be launched during the exhibition ‘Being Together is not Enough’. In advance of this launch, the society has programmed a talk by Argentinian artist César Baracca on Thursday 10 May, 7pm at Camberwell College of Art.
