Pioneer
A project by CommonAs that reflects on the life and activism of Emily Massingberd, an heiress to the Gunby Estate, who alongside her involvement in the 19th-century women’s movement founded the first female members’ club – the Pioneer Club. Furniture-maker Chris Twigg, artist and neon fabricator Julia Bickerstaff, photographer David Dales and volunteers from Gunby Hall have created an installation of objects that convey Massingberd’s character and ideas. Part of The National Trust’s 2018 programme Women and Power, marking 100 years since the Representation of the People Act was passed.
