Members’ Events: the truth about war, a video nasty film club, durational drumming

The First Casualty of War is Truth
This touring group show by artists from re:collect – Keith Ashford, Jacqui Dodds, Julie Edwards, Jill Impey and Elizabeth Turner – commemorates the centenary of the first world war. Installed in the beautiful surrounds of Jackfield Tile Museum, it forms part of Shropshire Council’s Wilfred Owen100 programme, a series of commemorative events to honour and remember the lives of those who served in and were affected by the war. Artworks on show respond to the notion that ‘the first casualty of war is truth’ and aim to expose truths obscured by time, loss and misinformation.

Sick Monday Film Club
Part of a series of events hosted by artists Dean Kenning, Vanessa Scully and Liam Scully. This ‘Halloween special’ presents Brian Yuzna’s ‘absolutely sickening’ 1989 film Society as a starting point for artists to respond with new and existing work, also screened. The line-up includes Vanessa Scully, Anita Delaney, Anne Kathrine Bindesbøll & Ava Fersi, Dave Burrows, Noor Afshan Mirza & Brad Butler, and Birgit Ludwig. Sick Monday looks at the influence of the ‘video nasty’ on contemporary video artists, and its overlooked critical capacity to express social and political truths.

The Drumming Experience of OneSelf
This live durational performance by London-based French artist Tonny A is part of Spill 2018‘s ‘Spill Open’ – a platform for emerging performance artists and makers. The Drumming Experience of OneSelf involves ‘one moving body with other physical partners’ and aims to explore possible variations between the ‘biological and the material’. As a performance artist, choreographer and writer, Tonny’s performance pieces explore physical identity in relation to the body in space and on screen, crossing the boundaries of dance, theatre and live art.

Prospecting
A one-day symposium for artists in Somerset and the South West, exploring directions and territories for artists’ practice. Characterised by persistence, artists’ practices involve continuous research and development punctuated and energised by creative interaction. Including contributions from Lydia Catterall, Rebecca Chesney, Anna Francis, Kerry Harker, 2017/18 Clore Leadership Programme Visual Artist Fellow Nicola Naismith, and managing editor of Corridor8 and writer Lara Eggleton, ‘Prospecting’ offers new conversations, skills, insight and resources, providing space for independent and collective reflection and learning.

Noise-y Pixel
A solo exhibition by Northamptonshire-based interdisciplinary artist Warren Shaw, ‘Noise-y Pixel’ presents an experimental grouping of works exploring ideas of sensitisation, analogue and digital, choice, synaesthesia, process, and mindfulness. Influenced by the phenomenology of sound and sight, the morphology of analogue and digital processes, and ‘open work’ completed by audience presence, Shaw creates artwork charged with his own experience of sound and colour.
