Jasleen Kaur: Women Hold Up Half the Sky
This billboard commission by artist Jasleen Kaur is situated in the outdoor yard of Spit & Sawdust, Cardiff. The artist explores post-colonial gender roles within archival imagery of gymnastics performed by the 2nd Royal Battalion (Ludhiana Sikhs) in Waziristan, Pakistan. By collaging the ‘tamed men’, who appear precariously balanced, Kaur uses the large-scale format to position research into discoveries of ‘non-masculine forms of resistance’. The artist has selected a reading list of key books and reference texts, available to read throughout the commission’s duration. Library
An exhibition of 2,000 public contributions of ‘words and drawings’ collected by Sarah Christie since the 2016 EU referendum and expressed on clay ostracons – a potsherd, or voting card, used by ancient Greeks to ostracise unpopular figures. As the UK’s exit from the EU looms, the installation in Southwark Cathedral provides a ‘longer view and slower appraisal’ of where the UK public are now in relation to views held three years ago. Christie’s choice of material seeks to quantify this ‘unsettling and unresolved period of time’ within the politics of today.

Dwell Time launch
The launch of a new arts publication distributed on the Penistone Line Railway in Yorkshire, featuring contributions reflecting on mental wellbeing. Dwell Time team Alice Bradshaw, Vanessa Haley and Lenny Szrama chose the project’s name to reference time spent on trains at scheduled station stops. They will be organising presentations of visual art, film, theatre and poetry to promote the publication during Penistone Art Week, and for International Day of Happiness on 20 March as well as World Poetry Day on 21 March.

No Eden
An exhibition of figurative paintings and mixed-media works by Robert Fitzmaurice, considering gender politics and the social history of peace camps at Greenham Common, a former RAF base in Berkshire. Fitzmaurice has worked on a ‘variety of figurative and semi-figurative motifs’ over the years, developing a practice that directly questions ideas of power, gender, childhood and identity – themes that have a particular resonance with peace camp protests at Greenham Common in the 1980s, which saw women confront patriarchy in the face of militarism.

Tumult
A solo exhibition by London-based Scottish artist Catriona Whiteford, featuring new sculpture and print works responding to ‘the exploration of memory, insomnia and counter-consciousness’. With a variety of materials including concrete, clay, metal and paper, Whiteford pushes at the physical limits of sculptural application to explore shifts and new departure points. Central to the exhibition is a large installation made from flexible concrete impregnated fabric, which ‘drapes and swells from the walls’. By combining materials and scale, the artist draws upon the ‘quiet conflict’ she closely relates to her interpretation of sleep as ‘an attempt to unlatch from consciousness’.
