Little Forest Land Art was co-founded by ceramicist Jan Griffiths and artist Adrian Mundy in 2016. They first met at talks and workshops at Aspex Gallery back in 2007 when Adrian was first getting out as he overcame agoraphobia. It took him many years before he could travel over Portsdown Hill to Jan’s new self-build home and studio. He fell in love with it immediately, as it overlooked a three acre wild meadow, surrounded by 24 acres of ancient woodland, one of the last remaining pockets of Henry VIII’s hunting ground at North Boarhunt.
‘Little Forest Land Art… the story so far’ documents the first three years of the project. In those years the Land Art team has grown to a regular group of 9 people from varied backgrounds, but all with a love of nature. They meet once or twice a month to manage the land and work on creating artworks in the landscape. From the start, they have been very lucky to have Duncan Shepherd as part of the team. As a professional photographer, he has captured the work on site through the changing seasons, in all weathers, giving an invaluable record of the project so far. This will be celebrated at the exhibition with a photo book.
The exhibition will also be the launch of the Little Forest Fourth Plinth Competition, to find an artwork to be displayed during Art in the Garden, LFLA’s main public opening in early Summer. Now in it’s third year, the previous winners were stunning contemporary sculptures, but Jan and Adrian are open to work in any medium from artists and makers from Hampshire and the adjoining counties.
The exhibition is also a great opportunity for people who might want to join the team. They are always looking for more volunteers to help around the site, whether that’s cutting brambles, woodland management, chainsaw operators, fungi identifiers, drone pilots or other artists wanting to work outdoors. There are many ways people can get involved… and as Adrian knows, just how beneficial being in a natural environment is for your general mental health.
For people wanting to have a closer look there will be an Open Day at Little Forest on Sunday November 24th for people to see the site and view the Fourth Plinth in person.
