Critical Moss: Art as Independence
Critical Moss: Art as Independence

With its precursor title ‘Critical Moss: Art beyond the Bubble’ this book builds on a 2019 survey of 100 artists drawn from 17 countries. The survey identified a resilient character in rural creative people despite the isolation promoted through government action or ‘art world’ attitudes.

This title goes after the structural elements of the Art World and employing a Bourdieusian sociological analysis pushes home the point that globalisation is driving the triumph of economic capital over any remaining thought that art can continue to be ‘for art’s sake’. Under these conditions an individual self-identifying as an artist might choose to disengage in varying degrees from the market values of that world, or to avoid the solipsistic attitudes seen there, or in the final analysis to go ‘off-grid’ in a decisive step beyond the art scene.

In any change by the artist there will be a process of taking stock and making a fresh evaluation of the artist’s resources and requirements. The contribution of Bourdieu’s analysis will be to explore and name the relative worth of the artist’s social and cultural capital set against the raw economic force of institutional players in the Field.

Often polemical, the book is illustrated by a short photo-fable of black and white photographs by Aldobranti.
