For the first time, a-n’s Artists Bursaries distributed awards of £500-£1,500 on a monthly cycle, giving artists the flexibility to apply for a bursary at a time they feel is most relevant to their practice. The bursaries will be used to support a wide range of professional development activities, enabling artists to nurture their practice and create new opportunities for a step change in their careers. Aimed at visual artists working in all visual arts disciplines and at any stage of their career, a-n Bursaries 2022-23 received 1,678 applications.
Artists Council members Mollie Balshaw, Ross Head, Jannat Hussain, Yva Jung, and Tom Pope joined Wing-Sie Chan, Head of Programmes at a-n, and Amy Botfield, artist and writer, on the selection panel.
Jannat Hussain said “Being on the bursary panel was a very insightful and exciting opportunity. It was great to see the diversity of artistic practices within a-n membership and understand where funding is needed”.
Speaking about the focus for the 2022-23 bursary programme, Amy Botfield said “The focus was on supporting developments in artistic practice rather than addressing financial hardship. There was a brilliant mix of applications and extensive discussion among the panel about which eligible applications to support. We were glad to be able to award bursaries to artists across the UK, at all stages of their career, working in myriad sub-disciplines and media. From the number of applications received, it’s clear demand for the programme remains high.”
Wing-Sie Chan added “a-n is committed to developing its bursary programme to enable artists to thrive. This year is the first time we have trialled the distribution of bursary awards on a monthly basis and it has been incredible to be able to support artists flexibly, allowing them to apply for a bursary at a time they feel is most relevant to their practice. We have learned a lot through this process and will undergo a period of evaluation to analyse the impact, develop our capacity, and identify improvements to inform future iterations of the programme. We look forward to supporting more artists to further their artistic practice and careers.”
