Bringing together a network of over 40 professional visual art organisations from across Europe, the International Association of Art (IAA) Europe Symposium 2024, “Art and War”, is organised in collaboration with the Lithuanian Association of Art Creators and the Lithuanian Artists’ Association.
War has a profound and often complex impact on art and artists, which can both destroy and inspire creativity, shaping unique forms of artistic expression. This symposium aims to explore the intricate relationship between art and war from different historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives.
We will explore how artists respond to the challenges of war, discussing its impact on art institutions and the creative process. We will also examine how artists express the horrors of conflict and use their work as a powerful tool of resistance against violence and injustice, and to advocate for peace. By encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue among professionals from the fields of art, philosophy and politics, the symposium offers a platform for artists to share their experiences and insights, highlighting how art can help us endure, understand, and ultimately survive the experience of war.
