It’s the last day of my exhibition in Salzburg today after 3 weeks. The gallery owner apologised to me at the Private View as she was embarrased because so few of those she invited attended. Those we invited did attend so it looked as though we did all the work.
It’s not really my position to advise on how to publicise a PV but I had to suggest to her that email invites are not the best way. People are inundated daily by emails and they are easily missed or ignored. By asking someone personally if they would like an invitation is a subtle, personal and an effective way of knowing who might attend.
Robert Lehner, the Austrian artist and a family friend, who Emily and I invited was very reassuring as he has ‘been there’ and ‘done it’ many times before. He liked my pictures and told me it was not my fault that so few attended the PV. It was pouring with rain, it was the pre-opening of the Salzburg music festival and it was the summer.
I am actually fine about it all…I never have any expectations so I am never disappointed. We had a great time staying with close Austrian friends in Thiersee and Oberweng. I drove 2,000 miles and Smartie had her first taste of apple strudel!
I see all this as just the start…having hidden away creating pictures for many years I now know that my work is admired and loved by those who matter most to me…
