Part of the Mayor’s Thames Festival 2009 programme is an intriguing installation by artist duo Sorensen & Byrne. Entitled Tick Tock this work is moveable and edible! The artists have recreated a garden in a redundant rowing boat. This tiny space has been planted up with a bonanza of lovely fresh fruit and vegetables from the Kentish countryside including hop plants and an apple tree. Suspended from a bold A-frame structure and operating like a pendulum the work is broadly grounded in the history of the area and lends shape to what the artists think our cities of the future may look like. By creating a sustainable and productive garden piece using native species the artists aim to reconnect an urban public with natural cycle of agriculture.
