Earlier this year, a condemned terraced house in Barrow-in-Furness was given a final lease of life as the Carlisle-born artist, Maddi Nicholson, took an inflated, scale model of the original on a tour of Cumbria. With windows protected by metal grilles against burglary and vandalism, the house’s doppelganger looked like the embodiment of urban decay and could have been extracted from any street of any northern town. By locating it in recreational, built-up and industrial areas of the county, the artist explored the relationship between this single house extracted from a terrace and each new environment. From 26 September, the house comes temporarily to rest in Tullie House. Here, it takes its place alongside billboard images of its Cumbrian odyssey and other recent works by Maddi Nicholson in a major new solo exhibition of the artist’s work. Going Home from Here explores the relationship between the personal and the public, home and regeneration. The exhibition has been commissioned by Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery and supported by Arts Council England through Grants for the Arts.
