In 1919 Sigmund Freud wrote the essay “The Uncanny” which explored the unsettling psychological effect of perceiving the familiar or “homely” which has somehow been rendered strange: “… the uncanny is that species of the frightening that goes back to what was once well known and had long been familiar” (Freud, The Uncanny, (1919) p. 124). In this exhibition, Rosina Godwin and Jane Askew explore their own personal encounters with the uncanny. Rosina’s sculptural pieces explore the hidden desires of the unconscious mind by playing with the usual cosy associations of textiles, where the seemingly naive conceals a darker intent. Jane’s paintings respond to the suburban landscape at dusk where the apparently homely and familiar environment is rendered eerily uncanny as day is subsumed by night. www.janeaskew.co.uk www.rosinagodwin.co.uk
