“I’m always after a sense of unease in my paintings, where nothing is as it seems. I have always felt that the act of painting itself was a balancing act; decisions made in one area can have implications to the whole image. It’s always difficult with narrative painting to balance the motifs with the natural growth of a painting, the original idea you may have for the basis of a painting may be out weighed against the natural occurrence of the image, which is completely unforeseen and can only happen in the act of painting. Sometimes this occurrence works for the image and it takes you to new ground, whereas sometimes it’s a dead end and you end up with nothing. There comes a point when you have to decide which to allow. It is this balancing act, which I find interesting.”
