The Lincoln Art Programme has commissioned Cardiff based artist S Mark Gubb, in collaboration with theUsher Gallery, to develop a series of flags which will fly atop the building this autumn. The hoisting andflying of Gubb’s flags represents a symbolic act of new beginnings as the Usher Gallery re-opens followinga recent redevelopment.Titled Union, S Mark Gubb has used the project as an opportunity to explore the history and representationof national identity within the Union Jack flag. Gubb will use each of the Usher Gallery’s four flagpoles tohoist historical variations of the Union Jack flag design, showing how the collective nations of England,Ireland, Scotland and Wales have been represented in the United Kindgom flags over the years.Collectively the flags depict the historical struggle to representing a united nation, a collaborative identityand single power.Union is a striking project that continues Gubb’s ongoing interest in signs, symbols and their associatedmeans by creating this new public artwork for the Usher Gallery that will be visible across the city of Lincoln. The project stemmed from Gubb’s interest in being an English / Welsh artist and how the union of country’sand patriotism is represented today.Union launches with a unique ceremony in the Usher grounds, on Saturday 25th Sept, 2pm till 4pm, allowingfor the audience to witness the hoisting of the flags.
