Material Rites presents new work in diverse media from a group of emerging and established Scottish based artists. By bringing these artists together, this exhibition emphasises the influence materials can have on an artist and the work they create. The interactive, multi-media and multi-sensory nature of the exhibits mirrors the way we experience material combinations in modern life. In tandem, Material Rites strives to make accessible the material language of an artwork. Materials are too often neglected in the interpretation of art. In non-traditional work the materials have something to say; iconographies and meanings that are recognised, manipulated then transmitted by the artist. Materials stimulate physical and psychological reactions; they can stir emotions, memories and senses thus establishing a new comprehension of the ideas that embody an artwork.
