Not Forgotten forms part of Contemporary Heritage, an ambitious new programme of artist commissions inspired by Pennine Lancashire’s cultural heritage. The installation in Towneley Hall and Park is the first in a series of artworks which will take place at historic venues across Pennine Lancashire. The first commission was awarded to Geraldine Pilgrim whose installations subtly reveal memories and atmospheres, as well as the history of a place. Not Forgotten is inspired by a distinctive 1601 family portrait of John and Mary Towneley and their fourteen children. The painting which hangs peacefully in the Towneley Room acknowledges the lives of their seven daughters and seven sons as if they had all survived to adulthood. Not Forgotten celebrates the Towneley family lineage and casts a light on the lives of those who lived in this former family home. The three dimensional family tree and the lavender and rosemary memory cots are living memorials to each child and present a compelling meditation on remembrance and loss. Not Forgotten is commissioned by Mid Pennine Arts in partnership with Towneley Hall and Park. Towneley Hall and Park is owned and managed by Burnley Borough Council. Mid Pennine Arts are developing further Contemporary Heritage commissions with Lancashire County Council and partner venues; Clitheroe Castle Museum, Gawthorpe Hall, Helmshore Mills Textile Museum and Turton Tower.
