As Head of Programmes you’ll shape and deliver a member offer aligned with our new strategic plan and brand strategy. 2025 is a defining year for a-n – we’re turning 45, launching a new website and hosting a major international symposium on artists’ rights. It’s an exciting time to join us and drive what comes next.
Key responsibilities
- Champion artists – Working closely with our CEO, you’ll support a-n’s advocacy work, leading the delivery of our 2025 symposium on artists’ rights and advocacy, delivered in partnership with the International Association of Art Europe and Liverpool Biennial.
- Ensure artists’ voices are heard – You’ll support our Artists Council, including quarterly meetings and the recruitment of a new cohort.
- Connect artists to the services they need to thrive – You’ll steer the strategic development of our bursaries, events and online resources.
About you
- A collaborative and proactive leader – You bring strategic thinking, critical insight and a strong understanding of the issues facing contemporary visual artists. You know how to lead a team and grow a positive, inclusive working culture.
- A connector and listener – You understand what makes a-n unique and how to translate artists’ voices into services, partnerships and advocacy.
- Financially savvy and highly organised – From planning to delivery and evaluation, you’re confident managing multiple projects, budget and reporting requirements.

Summary of terms
Job title: Head of Programmes
Reporting to: CEO
Contract: Fixed term position, maternity cover, full time (initial contract 10 months with possible extension to 13 months)
Hours: 35 hours per week
Salary: £37,006 – £51,330
Pension: Access to workplace pension scheme
Annual Leave: 34 days p.a. (including statutory public and bank holidays)
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne or London
