Artists Newsletter #4: The 2010s
In the final issue of our anniversary online publication series exploring the a-n archive and celebrating artists practices now, Guest Editor Holly Willats takes inspiration from the most recent decade to focus on how social media has become a game changer for artists’ practices.
Artists Newsletter #4: The 2010s includes features and art works created for the publication, plus a specially commissioned podcast and Instagram takeover that expand the contents to the online platforms where artists now share ideas and disseminate works.
In POST, on page 6 of the publication, seven artists including Larry Achiampong, Matthew Burrows and Anne Duffau ‘tweet’ their thoughts in 280 characters or less on social media and artistic practice, focusing on an instance when social media has been useful to them.
For a series of poster interventions within the publication, artists Nora Silva and Jeremy Hutchison, and artist collective TOTALLER present a statement for the decade ahead. Find their art works on pages 8, 20 and 32 of Artists Newsletter #4.
Over on a-n’s SoundClound, you can listen to a special podcast commissioned alongside this issue of Artists Newsletter in which Andrew Mallison from The Feminist Internet considers the relationship artists have built with social media, in discussion with artists Maria Mahfooz and Liorah Tchiprout. Find an edited transcript of their conversation entitled Pictures of flowers on page 10.
While on a-n’s Instagram until 10 September, Slow Install’s George Eksts has curated an exhibition featuring works by five a-n members – Fiona Curran, David Murphy, Nika Neelova, Ryan Orme and Milly Peck. Find out more about the takeover in Slow Install: an online project space on page 22.
Plus, in the latest 40 Years 40 Artists interviews by writer Louisa Buck, Zarah Hussain discusses the impact on her practice of technological change and social media, while David Shrigley talks about art, wellbeing, and how he uses social media as a forum for his work.
