For Assembly Bristol, one of the five a-n Assembly events that took place across the UK during May and June 2017, a-n devised a programme of events with Bristol-based artist Julie McCalden.
The Assembly, which took barriers to practice as a point of departure, was shaping up nicely, when the snap election was called right smack bang in the middle of it.
Embracing this serendipitous straddling, artists were invited to descend upon the Brunswick Club – where the majority of events were hosted – for a programme of artist-led discussions and unconventional workshops. Based in St Pauls with its skittle alleys, dance hall, bars and lounges, the Brunswick Club was being inhabited by over thirty artists, performers, film-makers and curators for a 9-month project.
Complemented by a-n led professional development sessions, a post-election breakfast and a feast for the masses provided social opportunities for celebrating, commiserating and letting off steam.
