My show We’ve been Re-Distributed at ARTicle Gallery in Birmingham City University has been open for a week now! I’m really pleased with how the show came togeather and it sounds like it has been well attended so far! I was ment to deliver an artist talk there yesterday but train delays ment that that had to be cancelled… However I was going to open with a quoat from Hitchhikers Guide to the Gallexy which I think is a good descriptor or maybe point of entry for understanding my practice, the quoat is as follows:
Cave paintings lead to more sophisticated works, lead to books, first with pictures, then without. Back to pictures with television. Onwards to 3-D experencies and finally interactive, multi-sensory, holographic constructs. Better than the real thing.
I also received an email from Southams Cardall Collection this morning saying that my residency proposal has been accepted and I will be starting my year long residency with them on the 11th of Jan… really excited about that! The project/residency is titled Exploring Local History through New Media. It is currently a working title and I’m not massively pleased with the words new media… I think I would have perfered digital participatory culture… but its not a problem.
More on this residency will appear on this blog over the next year!
I have also began considering a few other things…
I’m thinking about a piece of video which takes found internet footage from the london riots and presents that alongside scenes from sci-fi animations and movies (I’m thinking Akeria and Blade Runner at the moment)… this will explore the effects technology has had and will/can have on society and its political ideas and actions.
I’m also begining to think about what I can do for http://www.warwickshireartsweek.co.uk/… I’m sure I can organise some event!!!
Lots going on. Will post details soon. Very busy.
In the mean time have a watch of this in relation to my show We’ve been Re-Distributed @ ARTicle Gallery in Birmingham.
I can’t remember what was going on when I last posted so I’m just going to start talking from a few days ago!
Been really hectic at Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum doing the de-stall of LabCraft with the Craft Council and starting on the install of Duggins: A Warwickshire Impressionist but there has been so much happening there I can’t even begin to fit it all in to this blog post!
Second Star to the Right @ TROVE has also opened (on Wednesday) and it looks really good. Marking the Internet and the Physical 2.0 was installed very nicely in my absence – I wouldn’t have made the brick plinths for the folders but I do feel they work well and really tie the work into the physicality of the Old Science Museum location! Other personal highlights in the show include an amazing performance from Richard Peel, some very time intensive drawing from Ben Davenport, and some nice print based stuff from Dan Sailsbury and Matt Webb…
Tomorrow I start installing We’ve been Re-Distributed @ ARTicle Gallery so today see’s hectic packing of work, burning of disc’s. booking of transport, etc….
on that note i should get on with everything.
As www.ryan-hughes.co.uk is currently disabled as a piece of work titled Private Property I thought I’d finally do something with the www.ryanhughesprojects.net domain I brought a while ago and did nothing with…
SO… www.ryanhughesprojects.net is live! it has a current CV, some images and video of work (I’ll be adding more this evening), my dissertation is on there (i will also be adding the essay I’m currently writing once its finished) and there is a link page which goes off to organisations I have somesort of connection to! This evening I’ll also be adding what will be a newly written artist statement…
Flyers for Second Star to the Right at TROVE are in Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum as well as Gallery 150. The CD-R’s of Untitled #1 (from an ongoing collaboration) are also in Gallery 150 and are free to collect until they run out!
I’m really looking forward to making some new work in the new year! The first thing I’ll be spending any real amount of time will be on the install of firewall. I’ll be submitting it to CoExist‘s ON SITE 2012 as well as the submission that is pending with B-Side Multi Media Festival.
I’m also determined to find a studio so that I can make work / play around regually! There are a few options in regard to this… still being in the process of moving I’m hoping to find somewhere to live with either a spare room or garage. Other options include viewing an open plan space in a complex in leamington spa and continuing to hunt around birmingham! I’m going to take my time in residence @ The Lombard Method as a chance to reflect on what I actually require from a space! Although determined to find one I’m not sure I actually NEED one!
