Today I did the risk assessment and walk throught the install of We’ve been Re-Distributed at ARTicle Gallery… I also checked kit and have 3 working and matching VCR Players and 3 working and matching projectors!!! I discussed the shows general aesthetic and press, etc with curator Mona Casey and am really looking forward to everything begining to come togeather! I’ll post photos of install and then documentation once I have some!
I then met the curator of TROVE Charlie and Soph to drop off Marking the Internet and the Physical 2.0… and feel confidant that its going to look great installed in TROVE‘s home The Old Science Museum! I talked them through every poss situation that might arrise during install and i think everyone feels confidant! Flyers are now spread around Birmingham, are attached to this blog post and I’m dropping a pile off at Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum tomorrow!
Been working on a text to go with the 14second piece of sound I made with Flowlosopha which reads:
‘The work explores the notion of minimalism; in both sonic and aesthetic forms, reflecting the interests and working practices of it producers, a visual artist and musician respectively. This work is 14 seconds in duration and is made to be played using a commercial CD player’s repeat function so that it becomes looped for a period of time and creates a piece of music / sound art through this process.
This instruction highlights the participation inherent within the various forms of minimalism from the use of audience/unintentional noise in John Cage’s legendary 4’33’ as well as the action of the dance floors of Minimal Techno clubs to the Phenomenology used to understand the minimal visual art of the 1960’s.’
I will be dropping a pile of CD’s along with this text into Gallery 150 where I’m hoping they’ll be free to collect for the next month or so!
Also i’ve uploaded and attached the footage of firewall which I’ve mentioned in the last few posts!
firewall test
I’ve been fairly busy editing video for Firewall today! However it’s still not ready… but a section should be attached to my next post!
I’ve been trying to find VHS players so I can transfer the footage I have for We’ve been Re-Distributed for my show at ARTicle Gallery but have been struggeling with this as well! It looks like I’m going to have to buy a new one – which I didn’t really want to do as I don’t have space for more bits of kit knocking around at the moment! There will also be a facebook event page appearing for this show soon and i’ll post a link to it when there is one!
Other than that I’ve been doing loads of last minute checks for the group show I’m in at TROVE later this month… More info on this show can be found by following the QR Code to the right! I’m showing Marking the Internet and the Physical 2.0 and it looks as though I’m going to have to re-print the map as the orignal is fairly water damaged after Marking the Internet and the Physical 1.0 at The Birmingham Social Centre… But this isn’t a problem, in fact it makes the work more accurate!
Work has been happening on the plinths for We’ve been Re-Distributed, I have 3 plinths made up and am just making decisions on where to position the integrated speakers… I’m also thinking about the last plinth…
I think it’s going to be significantly taller than the other three as it’s being used to show a magazine as opposed to holding the projectors and VHS players – however – I’m quite fond of symmetry so it might yet be the same size as the others!
I took the 5th of November as an opportunity to get some footage of fire for the piece of work I proposed for B-Side Multi-Media Festival in Weymouth… I’m just playing about with it at the moment and will almost certainly upload some of it next time I post!
I have been sending more applications and proposals out as well – some of which I’m really excited about! And have been talking to Rupert Pane about showing some sound works we made together… there’s a lot of talk that needs to happen around this before too much happens though! I might upload some of this next time I post as well actually!
Some things have been happening.
I have a solo show opening @ ARTicle Gallery in Birmingham opening 30/11/2011 and running until 16/12/2011. I’m going to be showing We’ve been Re-Distributed. I will also be giving a talk around my practice generally as well as discussing the work in the show in the gallery on 6/12/2011for one hour from 12:00. The work itself is basically made… the prints still need printing but the files are ready, the email is written and ready to send, the videos just need copying onto VHS but again are ready and the photograph is being re-shot this afternoon! I have decided to construct a series of plinths with integrated speakers to hold the VHS players and projectors so there are still things to be done but I think these plinths are important to make the show seem more professional than having speakers, projectors, VHS players and shed loads of cables on show and I think this professionalism is particularly important when the gallery is housed in the university I have just graduated from!
Today I have been catching up with loads of communication I haven’t had chance to do during the course of The Event 2011… So I have spoken to Winston Thornton-Clark and emailed The Lombard Method about the residencies which are coming up there… I have been developing ideas for the residency and am thinking about digitizing the physical space and structure of The Lombard Method. This might or might not include making Google Sketch-up models, webcam videos, site specific projection screens, more integrated speakers, field recordings, interviews and representation of existing digital objects (http://www.thelombardmethod.org/ , http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100002597198440 , http://twitter.com/#!/LombardMethod )etc…
I’ve also been speaking via email to Soph at TROVE about a group show she’s organising that I’m showing Marking the Internet and the Physical 2.0 in. I have very little time available this year! With this in mind I have started sending more proposals out for things next year… first up was proposing Digital Plinth (the slightly better name for what was 4thDPlinth) for BLOP2012 at Arnolfini.
Still not heard from Southam’s Cardall Collection – but it is a while until their next committee meeting so I may have to wait until then!
work in progress on We’ve been Re-Distributed.
Its been hectic since I last posted! I’ve been working daily @ The Event 2011 which is a biennial arts event located in the Eastside of Birmingham. I am office manager for curatorial project SLICE who are running a project called B42 (which is the alt. Name for the guttenberg bible). We are distributing 7 commissioned prints which relate to themes of religion on the streets of Eastside, via post and from the office located within the festival hub, Minerva Works. Its been a fairly intense 6 days so far and runs until sunday so I recommend you make a visit to birmingham if you haven’t already! The festival also has a huge range of performances, screenings, exhibitions and other events which have all been really exciting so far! Its also been a great opportunity to meet artists and curators (which hopefully good things will come from) not to mention a great opportunity to earn some cash!
Having visited The Lombard Method again as part of The Event I have began thinking about my upcoming residency with them… I really feel I need to make some sort of plan before getting into the space in november so I don’t end up wasting the time and space!
In other news; work with Southam’s Cardall Collection continues! I gave a talk to their committee two evenings ago discussing my intentions, what I require from the committee and what I can do for them through my work… There is definite interest in working with me but there is also a level of nervousness due to the collection having not worked with an artist before which is completely understandable! It was decided that I would write them a proposal-cum-contract which they could read over and come back to me about moving forwards or not. The proposal is now written and I will be sent!
I’m looking forward to actually making again – it looks like I might have a bit of time next week!
