It’s a month since we found out we were selected for an a-n Artist Group Bursary and a lot has happened already. Our first visiting lecturer – Design Theorist Nuno Coelho – gave a fascinating, zeitgeisty talk on modernist history and its relevance to current political movements and environmental issues. Members of AltMFA are creating a zine together as a creative response encapsulating some of the thoughts catalysed by it.
May 1st – May 8
We were in residence at Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects, where we showed new work, hosted dinners/yoga/meetings/performance-walks and had a public reading group unpicking Naomi Klein texts and considering our own position and responsibilities as artists, particularly relating to climate change. Members of TOMA (who we visited a few weeks ago in Southend) and other new faces joined.
AltMFA member Shinji Toya is now working on our new website which will be a platform for our creative responses to the a-n funded talks series. For now our old website (www.altmfa.weebly.com) is still up and running for more info on our group.
May 22
Next up is a workshop/talk by Rosalie Schweiker on her new project: teaching for people who prefer not to teach.
June 5
Nina Power will visit us at Mayday Rooms.
June 12
Some of our members will be running an event as part of AntiUniversity Now (more info here)
