The shape of the earth is changing. A research and painting project about climate-change and the North Wales landscape. This blog is about the development of a series of paintings leading for an exhibition in an arts centre in Wales.

Mae siâp y ddaear yn newid. Prosiect ymchwil a phaentio am newid hinsawdd a thirwedd Gogledd Cymru.

‘Into the quiet’/ ‘I mewn i’r tawelwch’

Seeing that some areas of previously snow filled landscapes are now changed completely with the advent of warmer temperatures, snow, in itself, has somehow become more precious (to those who enjoy it particularly). The feeling of the painting ‘Into the quiet’, hopes to portray both a sense of discovery of the peaceful element of snow and yet the potential loss of it’s untouched ‘being’ or surface. This invites a sense of wonder, as there are no footprints, either human or animal and it is neatly contained within one field. It could be perceived as having more esteem in it’s rarity- visitors walk on the track, but go no further to view it, as though a fragile object on display.

‘I mewn i’r tawelwch’

Mae gweld bod rhai ardaloedd o dirweddau, a oedd eisoes yn llawn eira, bellach wedi newid yn llwyr gyda dyfodiad tymereddau cynhesach, mae eira, ynddo’i hun, rywsut wedi dod yn fwy gwerthfawr (i’r rhai sy’n ei fwynhau yn arbennig). Mae teimlad y paentiad ‘I mewn i’r tawelwch’, yn gobeithio portreadu ymdeimlad o ddarganfod yr elfen heddychlon o eira ac eto’r posibilrwydd o golli ei ‘fodolaeth’ neu ei arwyneb anghyffyrddedig. Mae hyn yn creu ymdeimlad o ryfeddod, gan nad oes olion traed gan bobl nac anifeiliaid ac mae wedi’i gynnwys yn daclus mewn un cae. Gellid ystyried bod ganddo fwy o barch yn ei brinder- mae ymwelwyr yn cerdded ar y trac, ond ni fyddant yn mynd ymhellach i’w weld, fel petai’n wrthrych bregus yn cael ei arddangos.

‘The Gift’ detail

Painted for the 70th anniversary of Snowdonia National Park (2021)

Often, painting with a philosophy to explore means separating the elements out to manage ideas. When re-reading about colour theory and the Impressionists painters these two paintings emerged.

Around the time after COP26, many complex questions arose; how will all those new ideas for change evolve to support an environmental plan to care for the earth? like the solitary tree, it’s place is in a fixed and yet delicate state.

Y Rhodd’

Peintiwyd i ddathlu 70 mlynedd ers sefydlu Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri (2021)

Yn aml, mae peintio gydag athroniaeth i archwilio yn golygu gwahanu’r elfennau er mwyn rheoli syniadau. Wrth ailddarllen am theori lliw ac arlunwyr y mudiad Argraffiadwyr datblygodd y ddau baentiad yma.

Ychydig ar ôl COP26, cododd llawer o gwestiynau cymhleth; sut bydd yr holl syniadau newydd hynny ar gyfer newid yn esblygu i gefnogi cynllun amgylcheddol i ofalu am y ddaear? fel y goeden unig, mae mewn cyflwr sefydlog ac eto bregus.

‘Oak tree in a flooded field’

‘Coeden dderw mewn cae tan ddŵr’

As a meditative painting over the winter months-’Oak tree in a flooded field’ began to develop from an abstract painting sketch (see image 1).

I wanted to capture the essence of an ancient, almost classical landscape, it’s depth and colour range, but with the changes in contemporary times caused by flooding and the effect of this on the solitary steadfast oak.

Fel paentiad myfyriol dros fisoedd y gaeaf – dechreuodd ‘Derwen mewn cae dan ddŵr’ ddatblygu o baentiad haniaethol a frasluniwyd (gweler delwedd 1).

Roeddwn i eisiau dal naws tirwedd sy’n hynafol, bron yn glasurol, ei dyfnder a’i holl liwiau, ond gyda’r newidiadau yn ein hoes ni heddiw a achosir gan lifogydd ac effaith hyn ar y dderwen gadarn unig.

hot frosty morning

While seeing a silent frosty field during lockdown, there were some warm colours in the foliage. I thought about ongoing conflicting elements of climate-change, as hot and cold, being contained within the one small field, like a sensitive area of the land body. I tried to capture those elements in paint. The compositions are inspired by ‘Monet’ and ‘Seurat’ paintings of trees.

bore rhewllyd poeth

Wrth weld cae rhewllyd a thawel yn ystod y cyfnod clo, roedd rhai lliwiau cynnes yn y dail. Meddyliais am yr elfennau gwrthgyferbyniol o newid hinsawdd sy’n digwydd, fel poeth ac oer, yn cael eu cynnwys o fewn yr un cae bach, fel rhan sensitif o gorff y tir. Ceisiais ddal yr elfennau hynny mewn paent. Y cyfansoddiad yn ysbrydoledig gan ‘Monet’ a ‘Seurat’ paentiadau o goeden.

lost and found

As coastal erosions reveal unseen archaeology, other parts are lost, such as fossils; as the coastal landscape everywhere is in slow motion transition.. The painting is inspired by projects such as ‘Cherish; Climate Change and Coastal Heritage’ which works with coast and archaeology.

And inspired by recently found fossils on the Jurassic coast.

colli a darganfod

Wrth i erydiadau arfordirol ddatgelu archeoleg sydd heb ei gweld o’r blaen, mae rhannau eraill, fel ffosiliau, yn cael eu colli; gan fod tirwedd yr arfordir ym mhobman yn newid yn araf bach…

Mae’r paentiad wedi’i ysbrydoli gan y prosiect ‘Cherish; Newid Hinsawdd a Threftadaeth Arfordirol’ sy’n gweithio gyda’r arfordir ac archeoleg.

Ac ar ffosiliau y bu ffeindio yn ddiweddar ar yr arfordir Jwrasig.

synhwyrydd golau

ymateb i’r golau

this was painted after reading that light pollution is one of the main reasons for recently dramatic decline in insect life, including moths curiously..

cafodd hwn ei beintio ar ôl darllen mai llygredd golau yw un o’r prif resymau am y dirywiad dramatig yn ddiweddar yn niferoedd pryfed, gan gynnwys gwyfynod, yn rhyfedd iawn..
