I’ve had a really intersting week…
Stuff & Nonsense was a brilliant show and some of the things people were showing were amazing!!! no photos yet (damn camera batteries) but i’ll post some next week!!! The staff show it was running alongside was really good as well…
I’ve been fairly busy in the workshops this week as well… I made the A1 print I talked about in my previous post and I also made the metal book shelf I discussed for the book of source code I’ve made. My perspex was delivered as well so I started work on that, their now cut into marker shapes and are hanging in my studio!!! I’m currently working out how all the objects should sit in relation to each other as an installation.
Been getting a little technical as well… I’m now the owner of ryan-hughes.co.uk although have done nothing with it yet but have made a few layout designs I’m feeling good about. I have also been really busy working on NewMedia Daet 11 festival which we’re running a test of tomorrow morning and then goes live on tuesday and runs until sunday (1st – 6th of feb) follow the festival over at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001255475994&ref=ts and I’ll be posting more about my work over the course of that week!!!
I’ve also been cleaning the studio for the formative review – it almost looks new again!!!
its been a busy week already!!!
the wooden google maps marker i was working on has had its supports put into place… and i received an email saying that i would be receiving my perspex tomorrow so i guess i’m going to start cutting that!!!
So that the google map markers were refrencing the digital / physical comparison of space i was intending them too i did a search for “internet” in google maps zoomed out to see the markers covering the planet and am going to print it out at A1 asap…
i also converted the webpage in to the HTML source code and bound it into a book then made a metal bookstand for it
these objects will then form an installation which i’m calling marking the internet and the physical (SOURCE)
I’m still working on the NMD11 festival as well and tomorrow morning we are conducting a test run in advance of the festival starting on 1st feb… more on this will appear at the time!!!
also dropped of some studio clutter / old work into the wheatly fellows studio today for a show she’s curating called stuff and nonsense which is showing odd bits of process and things that someone wouldn’t ordanarlly show which is open tomorrow night alongside the staff exhibition upstairs in the ARTicle Gallery…
on an unrelated note – enjoying SQUAREPUSHER an awful lot right now!!!
today i painted up my wooden google marker and made a load of drawings for the frame thats going to be holding it… tomorrow i will start work on making the frame and colour the edge of the board black
had a tutorial with one of the uni’s A2AA artists as well, she seemed to feel that my pratice doesn’t nessearcly need to be as physical as it is and could be more purely digital…still not sure how i feel about that??? but is something i have considered lately…
i made object for moving over #2 (stage 2) into an actual piece of work (object wise anyway – it obvisouly already existed) that i could put into a portfolio, which is something i have started considering more often lately as well… anyway there are some attached scans of this…
tomorrow i hand in my dissertation as well so thats going to feel good i’m sure!!!
i started work on something new today…
making a series of google map markers to show how our experiances of digital space and our experiance of physical space are fundamentally the same…
i’ve been making drawings of this for a while and today cut a piece of MDF to shape and at 6ft so i could see how it occupys space and tomorrow am going to paint and hang it… at the moment i think its a bit bigger than i think i need…
i’ve also ordered 2 sheets of red tinted perspex so i can make a series of them from this… i’ve ordered enought material too make 4 at around 2ft tall
i’m quite intrested to see them hanging as a group… and really need to think about locations for them!!!
been postering for 3,4 & 1 spoken @ intervals: Edition 1, mainly around digbeth as thats where the “creative community” in birmingham has based itself… but have also been posting them on notice boards in universities, parks and digitally. i’ve got some left which i’m planning on distrubuting around galleries, studios and arts centres…
still working toward NMD11 as well, the works called physical:virtual:freedom and is going to be installed in the main lobby of our lady of lourdes collage foundation, the whole experiance is proving very intresting, mildy stressful and slightly over whelming!!!
this week i’m going phone shopping for the project, i’m sure getting anybody to understand why i need two identical phones with one months unlimited texts and no other credit or contract is going to be fun!!!
I’ve been packing things up a lot recently and chucking things away as well… my studio is nearly clear enough to work in again!!! going to run a broom around and time to get stuck in again!!!
whilst sorting through stuff i realised how common / everyday the forms i use actually are
word documents
photocopies
SMS messages
MP3 downloads
screens
signs (generally) and language
basic physical activity
This made me quite pleased for some reason
