So, taking on board the feedback on my presentation, I have abandoned the small drawings and am working bigger and in a less controlling way. I managed to spend several hours in the studio and the only large piece of paper I had being a roll of tracing paper I worked with that.
Handling the paper was a big challenge for me and it has got some tears but I suppose they can be mended and it’s all part of the process.
“It’s sometimes easier if there are two of you” was what I was thinking as I was struggling to get the paper tacked to the wall, and wondered whether that would make a good title.
Well now that I have a studio there is no excuse any more for small pieces of work that are screaming to be bigger.
Presented my work to fellow MA students yesterday at CSM and came across as someone with no confidence and what’s more the work looked tentative too. So today I ordered some large rolls of paper and started to work on a roll of tracing paper that I already had.
I tacked it to the wall and drew a load of lines without resting my hand on the paper – contact was therefore only through the tip of the pencil. The lines are all wobbly and slightly wayward.
Some parts of the drawing have gone under the scalpel.
I did also manage to forget what I was supposed to be doing for while.
I managed to get a local photographer into the space last week for a shoot. “All going in the right direction” the landlord said, though obviously I’m going to have to do a bit better …
I’m hoping that links with UCA in Canterbury will at some stage lead to concrete interest in hiring the space for projects.
In the meantime, I have the space all to myself. Actually I thought it would make a great dog training area!! It is so quiet at the weekend; I reckon I could do some distraction free training of my still very naughty labrador. He’s nearly 3 and still very hard to handle.
Well having been again very busy this week and in bed with a nasty 24-hour stomach bug I got into the studio this morning and made myself stay in there for 2 hours. My life has been so bitty lately that concentrating on work has become a rarity.
I tried out a more formal layout of the current work. What a luxury it is to have lots of wall space to play with.
Getting to the studio always feels a bit like a victory – over Facebook, twitter, emails, other work, family, dog, mealtimes ….
