I collected my Cap Stories work from Elland Library today as they are closed for refurbishment and the exhibition came down.
The work had stayed pretty intact with only minor deterioration which was impressive.
The next Cap Stories project I’ll be working on is with Magic Rock Brewery in Huddersfield which is very exciting! Dialogue will underpin this project and inform the sculpture and drawings I make and I’ll also be running a family-orientated workshop all in collaboration with Huddersfield Literature Festival and Lindley Children’s Bookshop. Exciting times! I think it’s going to be like a mini residency there, certainly how I would like to view it.
Dwell Time delivered a workshop at HOOT today. We had some great conversations which ranged from the weather and what we were having for tea tonight to suicide. Reflecting on how we as a team run workshops and connect with participants, we tend to put ourselves in the ‘participant’ category and as peers. Things I tend to say:
- Here are some ideas/techniques. I like them for these reasons.
- There’s no right or wrong way to do it.
- Make it your own and let the materials ‘speak’ to you / suggest things.
- Expect the unexpected.
Conversations for Change, 26/11/19, University of Huddersfield
Dwell Time were invited to attend a conference on Creative Minds peer-led evaluation of their Community Reporter programme #softandfluffy
There were presentations and workshop elements which encouraged group dialogue and critical feedback. The main focus was on the quantifiable validity of “soft and fluffy” arts programmes for competitive funding. What language do we use to articulate the value of arts to the funders and who translates the “soft and fluffy” into economic impact? Perennial problems to which cross-sector dialogue continues to be the key. Who facilitates this though and with what agenda? “Networking meetings” reside in the soft and fluffy realm for practitioners across sectors but they are actually pretty crucial on some level.
White Ribbon Day https://www.whiteribbon.org.uk/white-ribbon-day aiming to end male violence against women. Plenty of men are victims of DV too but statistical it’s many more women (https://www.womensaid.org.uk/information-support/what-is-domestic-abuse/domestic-abuse-is-a-gendered-crime/?fbclid=IwAR1UCtDaaCHC_UiGKUBZaG02CkEMg6rqgGji1cYjD_5Cjq39lP6XirmVqDk/ ) Domestic abuse is a gendered crime. It can be physical, emotional, financial or sexual. I’m currently doing virtual college safeguarding on DV and it mentioned the Domestic Abuse Wheel. Compare also to the Equality Wheel. Relationships should be based on equality not power and control.
POWER & CONTROL: Coercion and threats. Minimising, denying and blaming.
EQUALITY: Negotiation, honesty, open communication. Listening non-judgmentally. Valuing opinions.
Don’t tolerate abuse. Seek help.
