i’m having a making day today. yum tiddly tum.
yeah so ‘m having a making day and i’m having a bit of a block so have resorted to making via writing.
writing affords me the space to create from my mind and today that’s where i find most things happening as phyically i feel rather under the weather.
in my current bio i describe myself as finding ideas from abstraction, sport and play. while working out ideas in my mind it’s amazing how much i can get done. with the bdo championship on at the moment there’s lots of useful research to be had.
something i’ve also been thinking about for the last 12 hours has been the notion of the avant garde. is there still an avante garde and is it happening away from the mainstream? is there a paradox about the avante garde currently being how there is a need for track record and previous experience being so much part of being accepted? if only i were a fine art lecturer at wolverhampton, surely i’d know more !
does the dart player gain from the energy of the crowd? where does the artist recieve their andrenalin boost from?
i have been playing with the programming i described a few days ago as my attempt to make chaos. i’ve reflected this morning that the programming is only a small part of what this work might be when on display. there’s a whole installation view to consider.
is the noise of the crowd support for the dart player?
tum tiddly tum.
waiting for the block to wain …
for the last six months i’ve been recording electricity demand on the first monday of the month. i have no idea how i’ll use the data. for now i’m recording and that’s as far as it goes.
i find it hard to ignore the debates about fossil fuel and at the same time am so bored with what is said about it.
personally i work hard and encourage the family to do the same at minimising the use of energy in the home. little things like asking the children to switch off their bedroom lights when they come down for dinner. i even calculated how much we could save if we switched off the kettle once it had started boiling instead of waiting for the auto switch thing to happen. i timed the kettle and saw it was 14 seconds of extra electrical usage each time…
in other research i discovered there are 165 million cups of tea drunk per day in the uk.
today i’m wondering if my late night i still with me as it’s been a slow to get going day. this does sometime happen. it’s a bit like watching the darts players having a mid game lull in their scoring.
it’s been quite lovely though despite this, we’ve had an email from an artist interested in our corridor projects. she asked to be added to our interested practioner email list. i was flatered that she thought we’d have such a list. the use of twitter and facebook has meant that so far we have not developed such an email list. i’ve written back to her and wait to see how the conversation develops.
i was also really pleased to see this blog included in the blogs monthly update email from a-n. being selected like that still excites me so a big thank you to a-n for the inclusion.
we’ve put the dceorations back in the loft, the youngest children have been rewarded for their dancing efforts last year and the bdo championship is hotting up. i’m returing to my new year rhythm.
with the final two thirds of the children retruning to school tomorrow, i’ve been delicately entertaining them today while looking at the things needing to be done by the weekend.
there are two.
the first is an opportunity i spotted here on a-n. when i read the call out again this morning i was filled with dread of not being what they are looking for. as i’m not they and i certainly don’t know what they like i decided to have some fun with the words and spent most of the morning bringing together all the information they require.
like razmos at lakeside …. i feel relaxed.
the second deadline this week is something for corridor. belper’s prize for winning the best high street competition is an amount of money to give mentoring and support. there’s a call out for ideas for what could be supported. i’m going to express an interest in some support for the art walk and on going develoment of the corridor idea.
so after a very reflective christmas and new year period i’m please to be returning to rhythm again.
i wonder if the edge might be a dynamic thing so it’s whereabouts is known yet remains undefined.
as soon as i woke this morning i could tell i was better rested than yesterday. i sit more comfortably with the unexpected news of yesterday.
there was more unexpected news today however this time is was of e-motion not working due to a date outage. quite the difference in news.
after exploring the date issue i found myself in a cul de sac de l’entraînement. i know there are many things to attend to and none of them seemed possible. i fell back into house work, washing up and cleaning. with all the family at home at the moment the days seem to pass faster than when i’m on my own. an interesting phenomenon.
have you seen the charlie brooker screen wipe for 2014? there’s a section in the programme where a documentary maker looks at russian politics and specifically putin’s adviser. if you’ve seen it you’ll know about the confusion this man sets up so that on the outside no one knows what’s really happening on the inside relative to the outside.
reflecting back to the radio three podcast about the rules of abstraction with collings et al, i remember how collings talked about his work with briggs being about bringing order to the chaos.
the research i’m doing seems to be going the other way. from the beautifully ordered visual programme i create chaos from an interaction with the work. with one particular work in progress this chaos takes the form of a sonic sculpture.
i’ve started playing with my arduino christmas present.
the arduino platform is open source so there is a good selection of information and code available to play with. i’d love to jump immediately into the worlds of bluetooth, wifi, xyz sensing and serial control of led. for now though i’ll stick with the basic components and get familiar with the coding and comfortable with the hardware. today i’ve been playing with temperature sensing and led output.
