After looking through artists work with similar themes to mine and feedback from peers I began editing and really looking into my film as a whole and how it was fitting together. As a result of this there was many decisions that had to be made to create the desired effect to my work. the first of the choices made was which film clips had been successful and which weren’t , this task was really helpful as it allowed me to eliminate a personal view within the footage to the piece which wasn’t as strong as the other elements I had filmed.
Editing and Developing Film
Bill Viola
An artist in particular that has really influenced my work is Bill Viola. His work conveys movements and story lines in a subtle yet powerful way. The work that he creates when displaying has a strong essence of life and time which relates to my own work in terms of the everyday life. However what I have really taken from his work is the strong response of theme that he relays in his work from his clear concepts which creates a powerful story line for the work to flow through. With this in mind it really shifted my thought process in terms of questioning the and discussing what I wanted the work to say against what it is really saying and the process of how to do this.
Film Work
when creating my film work I really wanted to focus on what I wanted to convey when creating the work. through filming and displaying the work it became clear that my theme could no longer be categorized as just movement, but challenging the preconceived ideas we have that goes into how we view movements of the everyday and challenge the way that we see them. To do this I have been filming from various different angles using cameras and go pros to film from different focal points on the body to show views of movement that we wouldn’t normally see/think about.
Gary Hill
Gary Hill is one of the artists i have been looking into that creates film work and projects the works in non-conventional ways. Hills work has inspired my own developments in terms of the way he displays his footage in unique ways. As a result of this he has created an installation piece of sorts which allows the viewer to interact with the piece. I feel that that this way of displaying would benefit my work as it really pulls the viewer into whats being shown and i like the concept of the audience interacting with the work itself not just viewing it.
Exploring Ideas and Concepts
In this project I really wanted continue my work in photography and film revolving around movement as a starting point. However this time I wanted to work more around the ideas of the movements themselves instead of the people that where in them. So to start out I started by creating some long exposure photography work.
Upon reflection making this series made me realise that this work was not strongly conveying my theme, in the way of I wanted to record the movements as they were happening so film would definitely be a better medium to use.
