So the last blog I wrote on a-n, simmered down after I began a 0.5fte lecturing role. The time outside my teaching was a rammed pack with making as much as possible with not a lot of room for reflection. A few years later, I am now having a break from teaching and I would like to re-engage with the blogging community to explore the idea of working from my studio. The sense of community at my studio Rogue, in Manchester, is fantastic, but I would like to expand wider than this.
After a few years in a small studio space, I have recently upgraded to a larger space. It is a lot lighter and I have much more space to experiment and build. I am feeling excited about all the avenues I will be able to explore simultaneousely in the same space, and also move into a larger scale in the studio.
My recent work has explored seafront architecture, particularly post colonial buildings from research in Southern and Northern Africa. Out of the structures I looked at, I became increasingly interested in modernist seafront architecture. I have been researching more examples of these, at this stage from images, and also interior design from this period. I am interested in the utopic hope in these buildings, this belief that only the future will be better.
I have been working on a series of small drawings investigating my visual research. I am also working on a set of two artist books which use relief printmaking. I would like to expand this into three dimensional form next.
We’ll see how it goes…
