When the pressure is on I would suggest visit a good exhibition. It is always good to reflect upon your own work when in the presence of genius.
The Picasso Challenging the Past Exhibition was just the tonic. To see a master at work to see how previous art influenced him and to know he too need to compare art to find some sort of benchmark ( 1947 , Paris as he noted 'you see it's the same thing! ' with reference to the Louvre test).
So here I am back in my studio working away getting ready for the final exhibition and so much to do! but to have taken a break is certainly recommended.
I have been thinking about where I see my art being displayed once the degree is over and that is proving quite interesting. I have submitted to the council to see if my work can be displayed as large posters in empty shop windows around town and have also approached a large corporate space to see if they want some of my pictures for their bistro and corridor areas. Will my work then be noticed or just taken as decoration and not seen or even noticed!? I hope people will enjoy looking at the art but time will tell!!
I feel really inspired again after attending a talk by an artist called Reg Boulton. He talked about his interest in flat surface patterns but also perspective – (front and back). He kept referring to visual patterns – both flat and in depth. He also talked about striving for a human presence in his paintings. And that he was at present concerned with the theme of humanity within nature. I felt really moved after seeing his work and listening to him talk about his paintings and his ideas has helped me answer a few of my own questions.
I have been very busy getting an exhibition ready in a large local church. My banners took quite alot of effort to get hung but the finished result I am very pleased with. It is interesting to view my images in an ecclesiastical setting along with other items of iconography. It is also lovely to see my images on such a large scale. Brilliant.
I think my final pieces for the Summer Show will be paintings. I'm planning to create a set of new images. To begin my process I'm thinking of again producing long, tall vertical compositions as I did for my original banners. Then I plan to extract sections from the compositions to use for paintings.
That's the current plan at the moment – so we'll see how it pans out!!!!
