The Mural.
I have spent the last two days running workshops in Silwan. It’s a very different experience compared to running workshops in London. The kids are great and the mural is going smoothly. We hope to have it done by tomorrow.
I also realised just how easy it is to take the "little things" for granted when it comes to running workshops in London such as access to space and materials (in terms variety) in London. I have had to make due with limited materials and space to some extent but conversely, it has opened up new possibilities with regards lateral thinking and working.
So the fun and games are over and i'm now back to doing what i usually do in London. Running workshops and making art.
I will be running workshops for the next few days with Palestinian boys and girls aged 11+ for the summer games. The workshops will involve producing a 10 meter mural painting, depicting the children's view of life in Silwan. I will post images at some point.
I arrived on Friday 8th of August and it has taken me a couple of days to sit down and set up this blog.
MY FIRST DAY involved landing in Tel-Aviv and taking a "taxi" to Jerusalem. It is a very hot place! A far cry from the London weather i am accustomed to. I did the usual tourist things like walk up and down numerous hills in midday heat, I visited the souk (market), saw the city of David, had an LSD-like experience by the "wailing wall", drank beer in the trendy Jerusalem bars and also managed to squeeze in a planning meeting about running workshops in Silwan.
DAY TWO involved a very interesting trip to Ramallah. I finally got to see "the wall", Banksy's contribution to the cause, I visited the turkish baths (it was women-only day) and had the first of many more to come "checkpoint" experiences. I really like Ramallah and i think i will move my "mobile studio" there at some point during my adventures.
DAY THREE: Even though Sunday is a day of rest for some us who live in the Western world, it is a working day for most Jerusalemites. Fortunately for me, I was having none of it. I spent the day sleeping, eating, farting and finally unpacking.
