The fighting history ” in art has changed massively over time. How we have portrayed conflict using art has moved from grandiose battle scenes and portrayal of conflicts leaders ( quite often in time consuming oil paint ) to a more ambiguous form of approach as more modern times have come to pass.
Here i will provide examples… from incredibly detailed and time consuming, oil painting in its traditional form.. The Death of Major Pierson c1781-1783 John Singleton Copley oil on canvas.
To a more modern approach, in an abstract form, painted 179 years later, ( i.e. more recently time wise )…… How times and styles have changed.! But the sentiment behind them is the same in some ways, as well as here, in the two examples i chose to demonstrate the subject, the medium is the same too, as is its objective, the interpretation and documentation of the same subject.. WAR ! The Battle of Hastings c1961-1962 Allen Jones oil on canvas.
Works from Stanley Spencer, Richard Hamilton, Benjamin West and Richard Deller chart/document the change in time……..
This exhibition is on at the Tate Britain, London, SW1, UK until the 13th of September.
