Today I re-read the biography I used recently for an exhibition at S1 artspace in Sheffield in order to help write a new text for the show at Derby Museum. It really has helped me to write more clearly about my ideas and research and how influential the residency has been for me and my practice. As a result I thought it might be a good way to begin to introduce my work to the blog.

Hannah Shaw was born in Nottingham, 1989 and now lives and works in Sheffield, having studied BA Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University (2012). Her practice is focused on creating connections between often disparate ideas through extensive research. Strongly influenced by the work of the Russian avant-garde, her work aims to use new discoveries and ideas within the sciences to view the world through new eyes and renew a sense of besottedness with the world around her.

I am currently at a stage in the project that I am really excited about. To best explain my ideas I am going to talk about the work in two separate parts. I will start with part one tomorrow!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION:

Ok so the winter months have brought with them a clarification of ideas.

To start with though an apology, to myself and others.

I have really struggled with how to approach writing a blog as I research and produce my work. I am often trying to find connections and ‘follow my nose’ when it comes to research and learning to communicate this is proving difficult.

So my new aim with the blog is to think less and post more! Worrying about the blog has meant that I have edited myslef completely out of existence.

I have an unfortunate fear of text, Roland Barthes said,”I am interested in language because it wounds or seduces me”,and it is this potential to wound that scares me.

This all may sound silly to some but is true. What if in trying and failing to explain my work I hurt it instead? What if I undermine it comepletely? I accept that this is dramatic but at least its a start?
