Finally i have finished the house! Really pleased, after a lot of hard work and thousands of individually cut out eyeballs, it has all paid off. The mirror tiles have finished it off a treat, reflecting all the eyes giving it an endless feel and increasing the amount of eyes looking back at the viewer.
I feel that by adding the mirrors it has also tied the house into the rest of my work by linking it with the mirror that I’m completing too. After all the times i very nearly gave up on this piece, the feeling i have got by completing it is amazing, very satisfied and can finally start to see my end vision being created.
I decided to put the bottom floor mirrors in before i had even finished sticking the eyes in, mostly because i was becoming very dejected with cutting and sticking the eyes and it still looking like i was getting nowhere while time was quickly ticking away. It gave me the boost i needed to carry on because as sson as those tiles were in and i only had that one quarter of the house left to finish, i knew there was no giving up.
The mirrors also reflect the light so well it lights up the whole house making it easier to see the interior and playing with the perceptions of how big the house is.
Top half is totally finished except for the edges that i will do once i have completed the whole of the inside. I’ve put the mirrors on the floor and ceiling of the top floor and it makes the interior of the house look bigger on the inside, reminding me of the tardis.
This feels never-ending. Just a little update, almost halfway through the bottom floor, it’s frustrating knowing that i’m over halfway but also knowing exactly how long it has taken me to get this far and how much work has gone into it. These pictures just show how far i have to go.
I couldn’t decide how to finish the house off then it came to me all of a sudden and i knew it would be the perfect thing for it. i chose to add mirror tiles to the floors and ceilings of the house. i had to measure the size of the floors and ceilings and work out how many tiles i would need and as every floor was a slightly different size due to the slightly misshapen and ramshackle feel of the house.
I ended up using both 10mm x 10mm tiles and 20mm x 20mm for the house so there wouldn’t be huge gaps. i thought i’d get the top floor in before i had even half completed the bottom floor as i was just desperate to see if it would look the way i had imagined it and it did. It amplified the eyes, made it look like there was twice as many in there as there was already and when you got close up and looked inside you also got your own broken reflection looking back at you.
These faces are a bit larger than the other collages i had done, all four are A4 size and from full magazine pages. They are also a lot more simple than the others i had done but because of the original imagery, they are just as effective. There is only two images used to make each collage.
I like all four of these and want to have them as a series of four as i find they all have a certain similarity to them. The eyes of the bottom images are all too big and too closed for the faces they have gone into.
I think the images i have chosen have a vintage look them and would look good reproduced on a larger scale. These images have held a lot more of their glamour than most of the other collages i have made but i still think they have the same uncomfortable feel as the rest of my collage faces.
