Well, I think we have made a decision to go through a visa service for our visa. This will last another 30 days, and then we will have to do it again in Chongqing. However, they are apparently less stringent in Chongqing, so they don’t require all of the deposits in chinese bank accounts. I think the travel to Hongkong would have been a bit tiring.

So now, this decision has been made, I can now think about work again. I was talking to Gordon about the Shenyang shop (women bashing appliances to vent anger), and he thinks there might be more of them around. He suggests I get a good interpreter to do a good search online. We also discussed the ideas of the service industry – the strange training of chinese to have a western smile.

We went to a few openings last night – http://en.cafa.com.cn/chuan-men-the-third-exhibition-of-the-austro-sino-arts-program-opens-at-amelie-gallery-beijing.html A lot of Austrian artists, and also Michael Downs, an australian artist – I am not sure quite how he got involved though. Maybe the Australian/austrian sort of connection. We then moved on to CaoChongdi to IOWA space, where Ingrid and Daniel, artists from Italy and France (now living in Berlin) were having a small opening and farewell party.

Today, we have Pablo’s birthday – the weather is shocking. Its freezing outside and raining – so my idea of playing in the courtyard of platform china is not really going to work. We may need to move into the studio – but its not so nice in here, but atleast its warm. We need to find balloons, find somefood, etc.

my cold has hit full force, – its time to start the chinese medicine.

We seem to be immersed into decisions about the visa situation. We could pay 400 for someone else to take care of it. We could catch trains to hongkong, we could buy flights that are pretty expensive. I can’t seem to make a decision.

Doug Lewis, one of the guests at the dinner party wrote me an email –

” all night, I had things running though my head: “…we are being Linked-In together”, that and other digital thoughts that were hard to avoid. Another was Marcel Duchamp’s sculpture In Advance of a Broken Arm or Bruce Nauman’s Bound to Fail. And Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider of course, the giant bronze that looms over ones head when underneath it. But the evening was not so daunting, it had the opposite affect. We were allured by the aesthetics of food, seduced by wine and bound together through conversations, all by simply threading and drawing-together the humanity between us.”

JaneLee also wrote me an email with her thought on the night.

i do think it make sense on me,to visualized that which position i was in such kind of social activity. it‘s nothing to do with jugement but kind of encouragement.the point is to participate and to discover the common link
among strangers and youself. that was unexpectable and remarkable moment.thanks Tina, Matt and Pablo.

Oh its a smoggy day today. You can’t see too far, and the sun is just seeping through the pollution – a weak little orange blob. Pablo asks ‘whats happened to the sun?’.

It needs to rain soon, or we need some wind or something.

I am charging the camera – The plan was to start another barber shoot today – but its looking unlikely.

Matt has just ridden into 798 to get some weetbix for pablo and also a present for his 4th birthday tomorrow. Matt decided on an electric remote controlled car. (it cost the same as a pack of weetbix 8AUD – gotta love China). I can’t believe my little boy is turning four – I wish it would all slow down a bit. We are organising his birthday party for Sunday.

We have had some major rethinking to do with regards to the visa situation. In Berlin, where we applied for our visa, they would only give us a one month holiday visa rather than the 6 month multi entry business visa I requested. We couldnt get the visa in Australia, as it runs as soon as its issued. I have spent the day researching, and to extend in Beijing, we need to transfer 3000 USD, for each person into two seperate Chinese Bank Accounts. 9000USD. It then takes five days and this lasts 30 more days. (You need $100 per day, per person). We need 60 days. After a bit of discussion with everyone – I think we need to head to HongKong to get a 60 day visa, and then onwards to the residency in Chongqing. Its dissapointing – I don’t feel ready to leave Beijing, but most of my work is happening in Chongqing I think. It $1000 to fly one way to Hong Kong for the three of us – I think we will need to look into a train. mmmm. We need to start making plans. Our visa runs out in 12 days.

I have had all the writing for the glasses project translated – so we might head in to do that tomorrow!

Got an email from Laurens regarding last nights dinner and he sent through a few pics.

Dear Matt & Tina

That was a stupendous evening and I think everybody loved your culinary treats.
The lamb was superb in particular, but it was all wild !
Thank you Matt- for the experience.

Hope your shoot worked out, Tina
and looks as much fun as we had doing it.

see you guys soon

Oh we are all tired today.

But – The dinner last night went well. I am still to go through the footage properly. The idea for this dinner started about ten days ago, when we met laurens tan at Jean Klimak’s opening at Where Where space. Laurens asked matt to come over and cook. I thought we could shift into more of an event/a type of intervention. We decided on an event that tracks emotional connections.

Our guests were Australian Ambassador for China (he resigned a couple of months ago, Geoff, and his friend Shirley – who is a TV anchor for CCTV morning news. We had a few artists such as Douglas Lewis and Jean Klimak, Gordon from Where Where Space and others, Jane, who lives near to Lauren and feabe as well – nine all up. All the girls from Platform China turned up to be the seamstresses (they were fantastic), and also Jamie to help serve. It was a great night. The food went really well.

It started off stilted. A small talk about the work. Matt talked about the food. They were a bit apprehensive. I asked the seamstresses to intuitively track the emotional connection – starting off with loose threads, and each course they ate, the threads became more tense and more restrictive. By the end of the night, they were all very much intwined with each other. It was strange – the accelerated familiarity – with in 30 minutes, there was group singing – girls, who were incredibly shy to start with, were climbing over table, songs were being sung (mostly chinese songs from the revolution). The Geoff the ambassador was trying to burn the threads and start a revolution. ‘Its too psychological’ yells Geoff. “we need to revolt”. I am starting to feel ‘claustophobic, yells Doug. ‘No one is connecting with me’ fears Jane. Gordan and Geoff start to discuss promises of feeding each other the more restricted they became. Gordon states ‘its more about helping each other’ – as they help each drink wine. I need you to talk with me, requests Jane. I have learned in China, that a dinner involves many toasts, and these toasts were continued throughout the night. As the seamstresses kept sewing they were harder to do – much wine spilt by the end of the night. I look back on the night – It was a strange accelerated initmacy. It started with people who didn’t know each other and with in less than an hour, probably about 40 minutes, there was singing, and all the interweived guests has strategised together how they were going to leave the table in one move so they could all start dancing together. They all danced, interweaved, until Geoff finally broke loose.

I think tomorrow I will write to the guests and ask them to comment on the experience. We have the clothing they wore. Gordan and Douglas staid connected for a few more hours, – its now beside me – a twisted mess of string and cloth, tangled, smelly and smoky. They seemed to love it – Wow, this is not like most dinner parties, comments Jane. ‘I loved it’. I am interested if they are still thinking about it, and more about how they felt.

I am unsure how to treat the footage – will look at it in a couple of months. We may continue this event – our next one may be in India, but need to sleep on it for a few weeks. As Matt, Pablo and I came back in the cab, a little tired, a little hungry (we didn’t have much time to eat), we smiled and thought beijing is a lot crazier than we expected. There is a real openness here, and also generosity – constant invites, constant social events – we have been here for two weeks, and feel like we are becoming part of the landscape.

On the otherhand, as I looked out of the cab window, onto the dusty wide streets, and the eeriness of the orange glow of the light caught in the dull and constant smog, – I thought, I miss the smell of the ocean.

Help

Dear Tina,Sorry for the late reply, but things change every second, my Japanese friend told me she was asked to attend a class tommorrow, too, which will be held at 7pm, so I have to ask for help from others again… You know, professors in CAFA always like this, they are so busy so they may arrange the classes as they wish…Well, finally, here come four girls:Yang Rui( used to study in Lu Xun academy of fine arts major in oil painting) Ji Fei(used to study in Lu Xun academy of fine arts major in silk-print)Yang Ru(the same as above)Lilian(staff in Platform China)and Me.(I am not sure of whether I could attend, but I will try my best if time permits)So, totally, there are five girls, is it too many for you?please tell me how do you think about it.I told them to wear in black, and they may eat something before they come, but maybe some other food like cookies provided will be better because the activity last long…Bests,JULIA

OK. Just talked to Julia. She has five people coming – and out of this I hope three will turn up. I hope. Matt is off shopping, and I have got some more white cotton. Batteries are charged, chips are cleared. The battery lasted 3 hours yesterday with constant shooting. So battery should be fine. Need to bring recharger. Would b good to have secondary battery and secondary chip. Got tripod. all set. Will head over to laurens with pablo around 4pm. The only problem I seem to have gotten Pablo’s cold, which Matt seems to be just recovering from. Not so good. Makes it hard to think and I don’t want to take any of that Chinese medicine. Matt’s been taking it and he just gets knocked out by it at night time.

Trying to organise Pablo’s 4th Birthday for Sunday. he turns 4 on friday, but I think Sunday might be better for kids. Anna Glynn http://www.annaglynn.com/ is nearby doing a residency organised by 24hour art in Darwin – they have kids pablo loved. Will send a few emails out and then search for some chocolate cake for sunday. Maybe Do do, sun ling’s child, and also we met ethan – a little boy and bruces’ child. He would love a big play.

Tomorrow we have next Barber shoot in the afternoon and in the morning we need to find optometrists to make glasses. Viki has printed out map of optometrists around 798. I will talk to viki about translating the glasses project to chinese today as the chances of someone speaking english are pretty low. I want to create a few pairs of glasses, up to 6 or 8, that have mirrors on the inside. This will become part of the nowness project, interventions that change the way we socialise.

Need to buy another drive for back ups. Head to sunlitan/chaoyang mac store on Friday and also find matt a dentist. Saturday we do openings, Sunday Pablo’s birthday and on Monday we should go check out the Great Wall of China. Tuesday lunch meeting.
