A retrospective blog which makes record of the first part of the ‘memory’ trilogy- Memory of Snow 2006.

A series of paintings were produced after walking through the landscape of the Czech Republic and Wales during 2006-7. They were exhibited at various arts centres in Wales and also in Berlin.

A favourite road in Wales on my return. This one is high up and goes over the hills to a town called Llanidloes..there were traces of snow and grass showing through..

that was the end of the journey and then the production of the work began.

The same winter light flooded through this corridor in a Prague hostel, the brightness of it was due to the reflection from the snow.

Somehow I had the patience to tackle the lines involved in this, with many mistakes along the way..!

The thaw began as I was travelling back, the colours of the landscape gradually emerged.

I was amazed at the size of the fields in the Czech Republic I thought it must be stunning when all the crops are fully grown in them.

I watched some Czech films on return one was based in the 60’s with people running through the corn- fields in summer, lovely.

there were two lakes close by which were frozen solid and covered in snow, each day tracks could be seen across them made by cross country skiers.

I walked around the lake each evening and saw the light change dramatically throughout the day until I had this image impressed in my memory.

The painting took a few weeks and more due to the size of it and the layering of the paint..oddly it now lives on in Berlin so has migrated back to the east from Wales..
