Having shown work at the same venue in 2014, Sharon Haward and Laura Porter hit a chord, stayed in touch and finding many common themes in their work are now putting together a new body of work to exhibit. This blog reflects the ongoing conversation between them.

Laura’s Drawings

Laura: I think there’s definitely a materiality element too. I’m interested in the grid as it references construction – especially the construction of cloth since all my work uses recycled clothing – but also as a kind of founding principle upon which everything is built. And all my work focuses on materiality and material consciousness, which is where the kind of organic elements of my practice come in – and where I think there’s an interesting overlap with the instability in your work.

Meeting 26 Oct

A long meandering conversation via zoom led to an interesting debate about sculpture and forms, about materiality and air, about straight taut grids and floppy flailing grilles.

Plan includes starting this conversation via a blog and testing out ideas, experimenting with materials and processes and for each of us to make a body of new work that resonates with the idea of the grid.
