Having time and space to work on new ideas after the New Year has been a godsend. Space is a much undervalued factor… but not to us artists!
I’ve been coming up with mind maps and numerous pages of notes to combine ideas as well as form new ones. These include extensions of current work or completely new concepts. I don’t do gimmicks and have been conscious of adding more value and understanding behind my work. Looking more at technique and materials. Painting a little more abstractly but always bearing nature in mind. I love getting outside and with Spring firmly on its way I can’t wait to use my National Trust membership.
What I do know is that I am increasingly drawn towards our influences in the home that have been taken from nature… so there’s an abundance of textile patterns and textures around for me to investigate! Past travels to Asia are also at the forefront of my mind… ‘exotic landscapes’ combining all my visual senses.
I also feel I’m being affected by architectural notions in the landscape. Probably more so from my time in residency at Paper Gallery in Manchester city centre last December.
Sometimes there are more ideas than I can handle and its about prioritising what’s most important to my practise at the moment, as well as listening to your gut instinct.
I’ll keep you posted! Here’s a few pics of new paintings as well as a few snaps of commissioned works I’ve been creating…
