Thinking about the inclusion of the laptop and blog in the degree show…

“The computer has an important role in terms of definition of the human. If the computer is part of language, then it must, per se, be part of the human, and thus speak of the human…Like a human, the computer can also exist at a nexus of complex relations, while I see strong relations between computers and people I am certain that the two are very different things, of entirely different natures. For me, the discussion of the human/machine relation is only interesting insofar as it tells us of the human. The machine itself is not interesting.”

Even at this late stage, I will explore the idea of using two projectors together (I will be doing this, but in two different spaces for two different works, I want to see what occurs when the video is seen twice, together). I know that the work won’t be presented like this for the show, but I can’t stop thinking about what comes next…I’m getting ahead of myself maybe. I am beginning to feel a bit trapped and restricted right now, as I know that I have to reach a “final” point for assessment but I don’t want to stop now. Maybe this mid-point (as I’ll call it) is necessary and will allow space for more reading and research, hopefully helping me to progress, but it definitely feels like it’s being stretched out!

I have seen some interesting set ups over the last few weeks: Fiona Tan at GOMA, Wendelien van Oldenborgh at the Millennium Gallery, Sheffield, and Andrew Carnie at GV Art, London. Each is pushing me to think more about working digitally, and the interesting ways they can be presented.

People are finally filtering back into the studios…I’m not alone anymore!

I cut down my suspended paper and cut it to book size ready to be bound. They will consist of 10 pages each with varying amounts of “text”. Some will be full, while others will contain nothing at all. The front and back covers will be made from pierced acetate, and I have chosen a Japanese binding to compliment the delicacy of the paper. They will be quite larger, just bigger than A2. Now if anything goes wrong I can’t re-shoot, but I have confidence., for once!

I’m worrying most about “back up” work now, I don’t have the huge pile I normally have at the end of the year as most of it is on tapes, so I’m working on a few pieces I had in my mind. Even if they don’t get finished they will act as a springboard for what happens next.

Four videos of seven minutes each playing on a loop. The viewer will have to stay with it for quite a while to see any change (probably longer than the average time a person gives to a video) but I like the idea of an investment in time to experience the whole thing. It means people will have different experiences, and different discussions depending on how long they spend with it, and if they find the blog and make the connection too.

The tone in the paper changes depending on the light….I’ve heard they look like skin, stone and walls…This is interrupted by the subtle movements of the paper, prompting these people to re-question what it actually is.
