Painting and theory

The reason for me to include artist Lissa Rivera in my blog is to get some inspiration from her work. Her work speaks to me in a very special way, concept and aesthetic wise. The colour palette and the way her pictures are taken create a cinematic space to which I relate to.
About her: Lissa Rivera is a photographer and curator based in New York. Rivera is connecting to social history of photography and the evolution of identity, sexuality and gender in relationship to material culture. Beautiful Boy, Rivera’s latest project, reffers to identity on a personal level, focusing on her domestic partner as a muse.

In her description of the series Beautiful Boy, Rivera speaks about experimenting which formed itself into an addiction, which I am amazed by. My favourite part of the series is Chapter III, in which the locations create another amazing feeling added to it.

Thinking about re-doing my works? 
In general, I don’t want to completely change my works, but I am thinking about editing some bits of some. For example with my painting, I have submitted my painting to one magazine(successfully!!) and I tried to cropp it because I did not like the way the scan looked on screen, so I am thinking about either cutting the frame around the painting or painting the rest of the canvas.

The projection: Not completely changing it, but editing the colours of the projection could make it more interesting? Which Is exactly what I did at the moment. I really like the outcome, so I might stick to it. On monday, I am planning on going to the dark room at the arts building and projecting both of the versions.

Because I did many drawings and doodles focused on my little exhibition, I wanted to go to a digital version of it to look more closely on the connection between the colours.
The painting is black and white, but the other pictures and a projection could be either b&w or colourful. Here is the colourful version:

I like the way it communicates and connects to one another, but i could also try the black and white version of the projection. I think that would be interesting to try as it could be also reffering to American Psycho by Douglas Gordon.

(update 06.12.2021 I am glad that I did not decide to along with this mockup. The main reason is that It looks overcrowded although there is not as many things as there were in the end. The idea of the projection is still in my head, but I do believe I need to have a stronger idea to be completely satisfied with it. )

Possible final pictures and its story line. 
When I was taking these pictures, I did not think of a story line and was simply focusing on the theme of emotions, which is why I came back to them now to connect the two parts and give them a text.

Cropping:
As I said in my previous blog posts, cropping of images was not my favourite activity, thinking that the photography looses its importance, but now, I tried to work with the cropping as a part of the process, trasnforming the original pictures into new ones, although they are still the same pictures.
Picture n.1: with this picture, I tried to focus on the emotion of horror and anxiety. Of course, because my work is still slighty turning to feminism, I connected the text/story to a traumatic experience between the female and male. ,,she feels trapped in the horror of the past, she feels anxious to look him in the eyes” representing an experience where the female was either physically or mentally hurt by the male ‘protagonist’.

Picture n.2: The second photo connects to an emotion of pain and helplessness. It focuses on the idea of not being able to be heard when calling for help. ,,how does it feel, screaming in pain in a sound proof body” Connects to the previous photography, the photo also responds to the helpless moment of needing help, not knowing where to search for it.

Picture n.3: Third picture doesn’t really represent an emotion, but the idea of some. Joy, Happiness, Love etc. The picture continues the story of a female not being treated right in a relationship. The emotions of love, happiness and joy were taken with all the abuse for example. ,,the emotions she used to cherish were taken away by someone that didn’t know how to treat her right”.

Picture n.4: Representing fear, the fourth picture also continues the storyline with a simple line ,,he is here, and she has nowhere to escape”. This line could be seen as literal but also not so much… this line also connects to having a thought about that particular person in their head, knowing that the thought cant leave one’s mind so easily… connecting to the fact that she has nowhere to escape.

Picture n.5: Finishing the series with a turning point/contrast is the fifth picture. In this one, the female fights her own fear and stands up to him, feeling satisfaction of being the winner this time, not letting the male win. ,,The satisfaction she feels, after hiding her fear, and wining the game”.
