My name is Jennifer Bailey I was delighted to be awarded an A-N Professional Development Bursary earlier this year. This blog will serve as a record of the activity undertaken with the help of the bursary. I also intend it to be a forum for me to discuss the realities of my artistic practice, rather than finished work.
I live and work in Glasgow. I lived in London prior to moving here for the MFA at Glasgow School of Art.
An art practice can feel hugely administrative, in that an artist is required to manage the practical aspects of their practice – budgets, applications, emails, writing press releases, travel, Ebay purchases – alongside actually making work. Although I don’t like to hierarchise types of labour, I sometimes feel like a secretary or producer for/of my own work. The bursary will allow me to make work in the studio, rather than just preparing to do so.
The bursary came at an opportune moment, ahead of two solo exhibitions taking place this year.
The first, A brief history of girliness (generously supported by Arts Council England), closed a few weeks ago at Space in Between, London. The images you see are of this exhibition.
Since the exhibition I have been making drawings and notes for some new sculptural works (see pics). This is the very beginning of determining whether an object might fit together and make sense as a real thing.
