Moving on towards finishing paintings

over the last few weeks working on an image that depicts the distant horizon from the shore line I have used various photos as reference points as can be seen from the first images my struggle was the actual horizon within this image yet I have mananged to rescue the work this is the stage so far….. the work is layering of acrylic washes one on top of the other.

Today in my new alloted studio space which will be the degree show space I am working on a 6ft x 3ft canvas the largest scale I have worked with so far It may become a final piece of work.

As with previous recent works I continue to focus on a layering of colbalt blue mixed with a hint of redoxide brown washes, working from very pale and building up layer upon layer, I have become more attuned and aware of the dry or dampness of the canvas this is essential in getting the right sort of texture to appear… either a slight hard edge onto dry or softer edged which is created by applying the paint onto a damp layer.

I started with the sky, working paint onto damp gesso’d canvas, I then focussed on the horizon,using Vermilion a (salmon orange ) this wash was applied extremely thinnly because the quality of the acrylic is good it has a pleasing effect even when a thin wash.Images to be added.

I am also aware of the ratios of the horizons on the works as each work will have to compliment the other possibly two or three works is what I aim to put into the show.I am thinking about a diyptic work. As the space allotted is large enough to carry this off.

Degree show space, yesterday I moved into my allotted Degree show space which was very exciting,

I also was able to remove the alginate from the final three hand sculptures in prepartion for the work to be displayed see image, this work deals with my personal response to found objects along the near shoreline and looks at the unmediated aspects of nature.

Having my space, I now have been able to layout and explore how and where I will present the work. with the idea of placing them in a circle… circle being symbolic cycle of life of time and space the sunrising and setting … the preparing of my seven plinths continues with the help of Glen our technician. Soon I will be able to paint them in preparation for the show.The sketch books I have showing ideas for the layout.

Today spent time organising my sketch books and putting files in order in preparation for the degree show, I am feeling optimistically prepared so in a good place… even explored further new ideas for the ‘Mediated’ Installation… looking at Guy de Bourds work I have further considered the book society of the spectacle and have been thinking about getting some 3d glasses this ties in with the image on front of his book as a group viewers are entranced by what they are watching…

Still have time to research further Richard longs work based around nature.feel I have time to refine and explore. The area that holds the most concern is the paintings I feel I have researched and experimented with colour well in the time I have had to do this project its a matter of keeping on painting and editing these works and improving on techniques.The folder and sketch books produced in conjunction with painting techinques application of layering paint and editing down colours and washes such as colbalt blue, ultramarine, redoxide, burnt umber,translucent perimone, and vermilion are colours that have an essential role within the seascapes being worked on.

I like the fact that every stone is different, one from another, in the same way all fingerprints, or snowflakes (or places) are unique, so no two circles can be alike. In the landscape works, the stones are of the place and remain there.
