Peter Doig exhibition, at The Micheal Werner Gallery, Mayfair, London.

Hearing about this exhibition last week it was too irresistable to miss! I took the opportunity to travel down today as it also tied in with the private view of fellow students debut exhibition at the Crypt Gallery in Marlebone.

It was very easy to find the Gallery 5 minutes from Marble Arch Underground.

Seeing Doig’s work in the ‘flesh’ so to speak was valuable, particularly concerning his use of painting technique. Viewing the works so close up allowed me to see his method of washes and layering of colours and his energetic brush strokes particularly in Barn Horse 1986 as the angles of strokes seemed also to create a sense of movement … this reminded me of my own work in sofar as I like texture as it adds feeling and interest to painting in my opinion.

Gray sunset is a highly textured work, size 60cmx44cm.

Also I liked the idea that his works are linked to culture especially in the work Contemplating Culture, 1985 as I like art that communicates ideas about society.

Contemplating Culture, 1985, also expresses Doig’s enthusiasm for texture, thick use of paint, and his like for bright colours, which push the figures into the viewers space much like Leon Golubs 1970s works.

It was interesting to see his use of primary colours within this work, which is not so obvious in the photo image.

Though I tend to use more natural colour, I felt Doig’s representing of figure was similar to my own as often my figurative work tends to represent figures in the forground or positioned partly outside the canvas as can be seen in my past work Culture Revealed, 2013.Size A5.

This also reminded me of Leon Golub’s Work Vietnam II when Golub portrayed the young boy coming into the viewers space.

Finaly experiencing the varied scales within Doig’s work in an exhibition space alerted me to consider how I will represent my own work within the coming Dergree Show. As my own work progresses… fellow student has suggested taking work into the white space at UCS.

Micheal Landy Lecture at UCS.

The idea that Landy’s works were a response to situations of everyday life, the appropriation of materials that were familiar, was interesting as it drew attention to and highlighted his skills at communicating on social issues through the everyday of life.

I particularly liked the concept behind Scrap Heap Services, 1993 as it was making a statement about how certain groups within society (in the Thatcher era) were deemed ‘lesser than’ and therefore considered despensable…hence Landys thousands of cut out figures!! to be swept away.

Micheal Landy’s famous Breakdown, 2001 was about the destruction of his ‘worldly goods’ The concept here based around society’s consumer culture… as Landy said “Commodity is an ideology made material.” Landy. It was interesting to hear how the public responded to him by offering him ‘things’. Which emphasised his point of how intrinsicley linked our society is to material possession and that they provide artifcial elevation to personal value and self esteem

The idea of commodification somehow relates/links in with my recent concepts concerning how via T.V./media we watch nature programs rather than actualy experiencing nature in reality…TV positioning the viewer into a passive role, and disconnected from actual reality. this was discussed in blog – 37 on the 23rd March.

I really liked the ideas and actual reality of the Acts of Kindness, 2011 a project connecting people with people through acts of kindness. It reminded me of Nicholas Bourriauds writings in Relational Aesthetics and Guy Debourd’s ideals that were about expressing art in the everyday of life. Acts of Kindness is quite revolutionary as it connects people with people and I LIKE THAT! its a step towards ‘no man as an island’ J. Donne.

Working on images for large scale paintings, aiming to produce a sense of being drawn into the horizon. Something that I found in Peter Doig’s work was that ability to create a sense of being a part of or an escape into… As can be seen my time was spent working and reworking the images to create a sense of being drawn in/being part of. Still having to keep working.I think my main struggle lies with colour and exploring complementary colours.

Primary source.

Looking at my last post at the images of colour, translucent luminocity, horizontal, and angle formation of clouds is helpful.

Spent time today focusing on natural light created at sunset and sunrise and its effects on the sky and clouds. Took some photos to work from with the idea of creating paintings based on the horizon.
