Peter Doig exhibition, at The Micheal Werner Gallery, Mayfair, London.
Hearing about this exhibition last week it was too irresistable to miss! I took the opportunity to travel down today as it also tied in with the private view of fellow students debut exhibition at the Crypt Gallery in Marlebone.
It was very easy to find the Gallery 5 minutes from Marble Arch Underground.
Seeing Doig’s work in the ‘flesh’ so to speak was valuable, particularly concerning his use of painting technique. Viewing the works so close up allowed me to see his method of washes and layering of colours and his energetic brush strokes particularly in Barn Horse 1986 as the angles of strokes seemed also to create a sense of movement … this reminded me of my own work in sofar as I like texture as it adds feeling and interest to painting in my opinion.
Gray sunset is a highly textured work, size 60cmx44cm.
Also I liked the idea that his works are linked to culture especially in the work Contemplating Culture, 1985 as I like art that communicates ideas about society.
Contemplating Culture, 1985, also expresses Doig’s enthusiasm for texture, thick use of paint, and his like for bright colours, which push the figures into the viewers space much like Leon Golubs 1970s works.
It was interesting to see his use of primary colours within this work, which is not so obvious in the photo image.
Though I tend to use more natural colour, I felt Doig’s representing of figure was similar to my own as often my figurative work tends to represent figures in the forground or positioned partly outside the canvas as can be seen in my past work Culture Revealed, 2013.Size A5.
This also reminded me of Leon Golub’s Work Vietnam II when Golub portrayed the young boy coming into the viewers space.
Finaly experiencing the varied scales within Doig’s work in an exhibition space alerted me to consider how I will represent my own work within the coming Dergree Show. As my own work progresses… fellow student has suggested taking work into the white space at UCS.
