Mural Assisted Local Campaigning
Every now and then a Tory government brings out a bill which is very unpopular in the Forest of Dean. Such as the Public Bodies bill of 2010, the Infrastructure Bill of 2014, or the threat of fracking by SWE in 2016. These have caused levels of distress so great that posters, petitions, letters and emails aren’t as loud as the anger people feel. People found themselves comfortable with a political mural on the side of their house when they knew 9 out of 10 neighbours, town and county councillors, local peers, the local paper support it, and their house prices are about to take a hit. When this happens I offer to paint a mural for people, they choose the design and I paint it.
Murals are an effective advert for a campaign, they provide an easy image for the media to use to accompany lengthy campaign text. There can only be a lot of them when they represent local opinion to an extent that politicians can only dream of, and probably find quite frightening in opposition.
Mural assisted Hands Off Our Forest campaigning stopped the Public Bodies Bill 2010, got the Infrastructure Bill 2014 amended, while Frack Off Our Forest 2016 campaign persuaded the frackers to surrender their licenses. Beyond this blog and my website I haven’t tried presenting these mural campaigns further into the world of art, partly because there is no obvious artefact to present. Also the protection of local house prices, the joy to be found in community solidarity, and defeating the Westminster tyranny is reward enough.
