Today Vincent Lavell, our Head of Course, organised for us to visit the Charlene Von Heyl painting exhibition at the Tate Liverpool.

He had devised a workshop which would help us all engage with Von Heyl’s abstract painting practice. He gave each of us a work book containing 3 incomplete paintings which we had to find and then fill in the missing parts on layers of tracing paper.

This was a really engaging activity, we got stuck in straight away and were totally absorbed very quickly. Vincent wanted us to appreciate how Von Heyl built up her paintings in layers like a print and how she wanted her works to be seen alongside the views out of the gallery and into the city.

After completing our ‘missing’ pictures we also looked out of the windows and added our own layers from the outside city and dock.

The Tate Liverpool has a beautiful gallery space. It was smaller than I expected, but I was really impressed with most of the art that was on display.

I really enjoyed Vincent’s activity for us. We were given packets with pictures of artworks on display that had some parts Photo-shopped out. We went around the gallery finding the pieces and drawing in what was missing on tracing paper. It was great looking at each piece for so long and having the chance to interpret and re-title it.

Doing this gave us more time to connect with the artwork. We then added cityscape drawings on top of our others to create a really cool looking composite image.
