29028
A four week, durational performance One hundred hours of performing the phrase “Two steps forward, one step back”; a stop-motion animation, walking up and down The Harris Flights wearing a suit 29028 is an adaptation of previous, smaller scale performances (2-4 hours) at The Bluecoat, Liverpool and Arnolfini, Bristol Performing for one hundred hours over four weeks in a public square represents an increase in scale, commitment, duration and ambition My practice includes performing phrases; during the Guild 2012 I performed “Un sou pour vos pensees (A penny for your thoughts)” in which I sit on the street wearing a suit, in a hazard tape covered frame with a pile of pennies At first glance it looks like I’m begging but on closer inspection I am giving I have previously performed at Castlefield in Manchester (hanging from the ceiling with the soles of my feet one inch from the floor) and been an Artist in Residence at In The Shops Now! with incertainplaces The Harris Flights are a stage – a unique and site specific opportunity for this minority medium to engage a Preston audience with contemporary art; to sit, watch and discuss contemporary art, even mimic and join in! I am happy to walk and talk Performing phrases raises questions about the language[1] we use on a daily basis; repeating the performance ritualises and loops our language to create physical feedback The spirit of the phrase “Two steps forward, one step back” is positive, that regardless of life’s struggles we carry on with our everyday endeavours I am in training to climb a mountain; a mental, mythical mountain. It’s not a real mountain, it’s a metaphorical mountain but I know it’s there and “because it’s there” is an oft cited reason for climbing Everest The Harris Flights are my Everest The reason for the staggered performance is so that my body can acclimatise to the repetitive exercise and build up the strength to endure doing the same action over and over again for 8 hours a day in the fourth week – the final ascent 100 hours @ £10 per hour = £1,000

“Brecht also concluded that nuclear physics had led to a redefinition of matter since it was no longer possible to ‘consider the structure of an atom without feeling that an object is becoming an event and that every event is an object’.” Chapter 3 of The ‘do-it-yourself’ artwork, Anna Dezeuze
And I realised the number of the alotment is 73, it could be, is, an off-site, project space.
Finally, framed postcards.
Builder peering at postcard in living room window advertising a cup of tea for sale at £100 (Shrigley).
The village green is grey, concrete.
The 73rd object, is the allotment.
Doing the same Sudoku, photocopies.
