Come on now…
I wonder if the participation aspect of this project will be more of an issue than actually working with the materials….once I get them.
This must be the first hump. How to get people to join in? If you’d like to, please send an image or description to [email protected].
Blunt soap
I found this not-so complimentary bar of soap in the bathroom, of one of the hundred odd rooms I stayed in whilst backpacking around South East Asia. I’m not convinced that this was decided as the best design for a hotel free-be. Perhaps it was intended to be instructive– I can’t claim that I was anything other than what the glycerine letters spelt. Nevertheless, this soap made me feel very unwelcome and the least at home I ever felt. Considering I was living nomadically, that’s one powerful object.
White China Poodle
Many thanks to artist Kate Murdoch for this image of an object that most distinctly evokes the idea of home.

What object reminds you of home?
Do you have in your possession an object that you associate with home? This might evoke memories of a rather twee porcelain ornament that sits like an antenna above the TV set. Or it could be a particular cushion cover or a favourite mug. It could be something a bit abstract such as the sound of a back gate slamming, or the way you hang your washing out to dry. These are all just suggestions but I am most interested in what thing says ‘home’ to you- whether it’s where you currently sleep most, if not all, nights or where you feel most rested- or did at a previous point in time.
Send me images or descriptions of these objects please!
As I’m sure you have guessed by now, I want to use these objects to form part of an artwork. A sculpture / installation where effigies of your homely objects will form the building blocks of the artwork.
Please use the comment facility to share your thoughts- all forms very much appreciated.
